The next ProPilot Event is coming...

Within the next two weeks, you can sign up for the adventure of a lifetime to see some of the hottest spots on earth!!

Following the huge losses that the volcanic ash drifting south and east from Iceland caused to many airlines, a scientific and technical taskforce is being organized to assess the risk of such events on a worldwide scale and propose countermeasures or at least steps to mitigate the effects of ash plumes.

A major contrast was noticed between the British Airways 747 that was first involved in such an incident, which got all 4 engines clogged with molten ash, and the aircraft sent purposely to fly into the Icelandic ash cloud, which reported no significant problems. This proves the phenomenon deserves a deeper analysis.

The task force will have to visit a series of active volcanoes throughout the world, which are considered the most dangerous for aviation activities. And to carry the teams and their scientific equipment around the globe... well, you guessed it, Eurocargo's Boeing 747-400F was chosen...

To register your interest in this Event, please add your name to this thread. We'll be releasing further details soon  Wink

[EDIT] Published the event page, check for the route and schedule (select "Pilots" > "Events" in the main menu).

Cool! (Or is that the wrong word in this context Smiley)
Too bad I am seriously limited in flying time this part of the year, so I'm afraid I won't get to go fly with the geeks.

You all have loads of fun, though!

Keep one of those jumbos for me too.

Too bad I joined EHM just a little too late for the last Formula1 event 3 years ago, I won't miss this one too.

The event page presents the possibility of viewing the route in Google Earth. If you don't want to install G.E., here's a link for the route on Great Circle Mapper:
http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?PATH=EGLL-LGSA-FZNA-OYHD-WIMM-RPLC-RJFK-UHPP-PANC-PHTO-KPDX-MMPB-SKCL-SPQU-LPLA-BIKF-EGLL%0D%0A&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=blue&PATH-UNITS=nm&PATH-MINIMUM=&MARKER=1&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=shaded&RANGE-COLOR=green&MAP-STYLE=

I've had another look at flying this tour, but I don't see SPQU-LPLA happening on a weeknight for me Grin. Apart from that, I'll be on holiday during the final legs...
So again: Have fun!

Hi Dominic,

I'm very interested to participate in the Volcano Scientific Study Event, but I've a troubleshooting Internet connection. Is possible to participate off-line? I mean, report the flights by the Logger. By the way I'm newbie and I really appreciate if is possible to participate in the past events like Formula One 2007?

Thanks for your response Smiley

Sorry Roberto,

All ProPilot Events are run on the basis that you must fly each flight on ProPilot and at the moment, with the current version of Flight Logger, each flight must therefore take place online.

We are working on a new Flight Logger which will overcome these issues but sadly at this time you can only participate in these Events by flying online.

Hello Roberto !

You do not need to fly it completely online on IVAO or VATSIM network with all the additional stuff needed there. You only need to run our FlightLogger. In case of ProPilot flying this is the "basic online" flying Smiley The good thing is FlightLogger shares data with the server around every half minute only. Perhaps your onnection is stable enough for this "basic online" version of flying ?

Hi Dominic, is possible to participate without good Internet connection, I mean sometimes my connection broke down any moment, because I was a WiFi connection and I don't know if is possible with that. By the way in the page of the event I read this:
12   Puebla, Mexico (MMPB)    Cali, Columbia (SKCL);
13   Cali, Columbia (SKCL)   Arequipa, Peru (SPQU);
12   Nevado del Huila   Columbia   SKCL, and I think is Colombia instead of Columbia country Huh

Thanks for your work, and I'll hope to participate without connection problem. Smiley

I'll sign you up then Roberto  Wink

Fingers crossed, your Internet connection will be ok during the Event!

And I'll get the spelling changed too - we wouldn't want anyone ending up in the USA instead of South America on that leg  Cheesy

Thanks Dominic and I've a little question about the event. Huh I don't know the rules for the event. For example in the event the schedule told as: 1   London, UK (EGLL)   Souda, Greece (LGSA)   1400   12/05/2010   19/05/2010

It's means that I've to fly during this week..., but I don't know when exactly? I mean the GMT time or is possible to fly when is possible for me? I mean the best hour for my Internet connection...

Thanks a lot Smiley

You can fly each leg at any time during the period assigned for it, so whenever your Internet connection works best Wink

The 1400 figure you saw is the GCD or Great Circle Distance from origin to destination - this is the straight line distance to give you an idea of how long the flight is.

12   Nevado del Huila   Columbia   SKCL, and I think is Colombia instead of Columbia country Huh

Oops, my bad... it was late that evening and I did not cross-check against the English name (at least, now you know how we spell the country's name back here in Romania Smiley )

Now that the error was exposed, I will correct it all right.

Well there aren't many rules:
1) You have to depart / arrive exactly where each leg says (so don't try to land the B744 at EGLC in the last leg, it won't count)
2) You have to lock each leg and fly it whenever you wish but within the indicated date interval
3) Most important (although obvious): you will get a (virtual Smiley ) plane of your own so don't crash it, there are no replacements available

Stick with these rules and the event badge will be yours...

Additionally, sometimes pilots decide to fly some leg online and together but thers's no obligation here, just watch the forums if you are interested in this variation.

Thanks Andrei, but the error still in the web, I mean in the second one, but the first one is Ok.
12 Nevado del Huila Columbia SKCL

Sooo... aircraft available so far:

Tail NumberPilot IDName
PP-A902097Andrei Vatasescu
PP-A911929Trevor Bolton
PP-A922121Christopher L. F. Ingvaldsen
PP-A932565Roberto Cortez
PP-A941001Robert Szikszo
PP-A951997Alexander Worton

Please check you have these aircraft assigned to you in the "Propilot" section, "Lock flight", and look for B744s parked at EGLL. You should see your own marked in green and the others in orange.

Also... no more volunteers? Do not forget that during events one is allowed to fly aircraft in classes above his own rank, so it's also a fast way to get promoted.
