I have just come across some freeware scenery that downloads as RAR files. Can anyone advise on suitable software to open these? There seems to be several freeware options online but I am not sure which to trust.

WinRAR will do the trick for you too.
Shareware, though, so you'll get a nagging reminder screen every startup until you decide to pay for it (€36,=)
EDIT: 7-zip is open source => better price (free)
