All I can do is make flash. 3D, especially something as advanced as aircraft, is just ridiculous by my standards (or heroic). I have probably got the software, but not the expertise by any stretch of the imagination!!

I'm in the middle of 4 years in a superior 3D art school. Don't worry, it takes time to learn :)
Right now I didn't start 3D (2D only in prepa class) but I did learn 3D by myself before, i practice for 8 years and still very poor compared to the level of superior cycle guys in the school :%

How true......since i started modelling (or rather trying to model) last year the sceneries i've produced are of such poor quality that i had to trash them all.......still working on it though.....but there's still a long way to go before i can officially release something.......

3D software are rarely free.
The main ones are discreet 3D Studio Max, Alias Wavefront Maya, Softimage XSI, Newtech Lightwave...

I work in a company that uses (mostly) Maya for 3D and Shake for compositing.
They definitely do not fall in the public software category but you can download
a free Maya Personal Learning Edition on:

It's functionally the same but it will put some pretty unisghtly watermarks
all over the places, so that you can't actually make money out of it, only
learn it.

I don't know if Shake has similar offers as I only do 3D.

Max and Maya are the main actors of the 3D professional softwares for the moment. I think an autodidact might find the Max interface more user friendly but both are very powerful.

Does anyone know whether models made by Blender3D can be imported into FS? i'm meddling around with that software and it's a lot easier to use than gmax....if possible i would like to make that my base for making models

You can export blender meshes to DXF with Python script, but I'm not sure GMax can import the DXF. 3DSMax can, but GMax... I don't use Blender or GMax...

Anyway if you have time give GMax tutorials a shot, I heard it's not that hard to use and you might like it and find it more convenient / powerful.

EDIT : found this, about importing blender stuff to gmax, hope it helps.

I know how you feel, my jury is in 14 days. If I don't get 12/20 I'm fired from school :/, if I pass, I begin 2 years of intensive 3D ^^

GMAX can import DXF. You may know, I did a Freedomship scenery model



I did it in Mechanical Desktop (by Autodesk, the same company for GMAX) and I could import the model via DXF into GMAX. I am not sure if it was a basic feature, or maybe I should download a plugin...it was a long time ago.
