City of Bamako in sight, with Niger river

Some quick info, if you like:

Bamako is the capital of independent Mali, and was the capital of the colony of French Soudan from 1904 to 1960. It is located on the Niger River near the rapids that divide the Upper and Middle Niger Valleys. It is served by an international airport, by a railroad from Dakar, and by road from Côte d'Ivoire . Bamako is located in the region of Banamba.

The Niger River is the principal river of western Africa, extending over 2500 miles (about 4000 km). It runs in a crescent through Guinea, Mali, Niger, Benin and Nigeria, discharging through a massive delta, known as the Oil Rivers, into the Gulf of Guinea. The Niger is the third longest river in Africa, exceeded only by the Nile and the Congo River (also known as the Zaïre River). Its main tributary is the Benue River.
