EHM-1358 Tim:
Well I did the EHAM-EHRD route, very nice at night time well recommended.

Total time was about 30mins but this was with a slight course change (read on).

Asked for VFR clearance and taxi to the active, took some time as we were both unfamiliar with the procedure. Got the closest runway which was 22. Was on the runway for about 4 mins waiting for a plane to land on the runway in front of me. Lift of was very scary as I was in a mad spin trying to get the Bell under control. Once I finally got it under control I headed for 1500ft and runway heading, once I reached 1500ft I got a wonderful view of the airport (shame it was dark, could have seen all the action!), I then contacted approach who gave me vectors for some reason, but when he said I could intercept the ILS for runway 24, I told him I was doing VFR so a visual approach would be needed, the flight had nice views of the towns and cities and soon on I had visual contact with the runway, I was cleared and touched down at the threshold were I also vacated (;D). Then it was just a taxi to the gate. Nice flight!

EHM-1617 Iain:
Well I can do the LSZR-LSZH route in 25 mins before school :P

EHM-1001 Robert:
Hmm...I never understood why is it necessary to taxi to the active runway with a heli, that is probably parked on a heliport. :s

Indeed :%

Besides.... how..?? not every heli has wheels... would realy suck if you'ld have to do it in 'very' low hover...time consuming, and fuel consuming ..:|

Anyways... at work, when I go out, we just contact tower for a clearance, and if the airpsace overhead is clear.. then we do a visual inspection and just lift off from the helipad...

thats when were parked at the airport... mostly we just lift of from the helipad at HQ station

EHM-0654 Murray:
Learn your heli-control procedures folks...

For an unwheeled heli, the pilot can be cleared to:

a. hover-taxi to the active, or

b. depart from where they are calling from (I had this at EGLL for heli going S...)

b. is far easier on pilot and controller if there's not a lot of traffic around, especially for VFR flight. Furthermore, heli's are expected to stay in contact with the TWR controller whilst in an airfields airspace.
