EHM-0654 Murray:
'Ere ('ow queer...)!
Just been hard at work on sommat for my employer, and in that marvelous way that sometimes happens when you're thinking about something else, I think I've worked out why you all have been having such a hard time with the DC-3 AP.
Do y'all get your pitch trim right *prior* to engaging the AP?
Since I really enjoy flying props (single and multi-engine) when not flying the 738, and I have my control setup optimised for them (props, that is. I've got two control config files so I can switch between props and the 738 in a few seconds), I have rocker switches devoted to pitch and rudder trim, and invariably I tweek the trim during climb out without really thinking about it.
When time comes to engage the AP it doesn't have to do very much to remain in the climb I've been hand flying up to that point - remember, FS AP uses pitch trim to maintain V/S. Sure, the nose dips as the AP catches up, but not by very much, a dozen feet usually.

Well, the DC-3 have a very strange AP unit. The heading hold unit have 2 knobs and 2 scales. It seems the lower one is the reference heading, and you should adjust the upper one ! Before takeoff, or engaging AP, adjust both scales to the true heading, and then, when AP is turned ON, adjust your heading with only the upper scale/knob ! The below scale will slowly follow your heading and within 1-2 minutes the 2 scales will show again the same vector.
Something similar for vertical navigation, although I could not really understand the meaning of the lower knob. Also does anybody know what the "GO TO CAGE" button used on the VSI gauge ???
EHM-1199 Philip:
Interesting Rob. I'm goin to have an interesting couple of months by the sounds of this trying to get to grips with the DC3. A great plane but a bugger to fly when you're used to the comfort of modern jets or even the modern VFA aircraft we have.
EHM-1001 Robert:
Sure, it is a different story ;D Congratulation goes to the pioneers who flew this plane in the 30's and 40's
