I am preparing to make my second flight on the IAVO network and to ensure i don't spoil anyone elses flying i have been reading everything i can find.
Something that keeps cropping up that i don't understand is for example

information ALPHA copied ,gate 34 ,ready to copy IFR clearence to Bucharest
(taken from EuroHarmony online flying manual)

and another example from IAVO manual

Brussels ground SAB 17V ,stand 208 request startup information JULIET

What i need to know is where do ALPHA and JULIET in these cases come from and what/when others may be used

Hope i have made myself clear:[

They are the ATIS info, all the stuff you should need for your departure like winds runways and other info.

On IVAP, when you tune into the ATC, the ATIS will come up in the text box with all the info. It goes A to Z, switching letter every hour.

Quote
7.5 Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) UK
7.5.1 To alleviate RTF loading at some busy airports, Automatic Terminal Information
Service (ATIS) messages are broadcast to pass routine arrival/departure information
on a discrete RTF frequency or on an appropriate VOR. Pilots inbound to these
airports are normally required on first contact with the aerodrome ATSU to
acknowledge receipt of current information by quoting the code letter of the
broadcast. Pilots of outbound aircraft are not normally required to acknowledge
receipt of departure ATIS except when requested on the actual ATIS broadcast. If,
however, pilots report receipt of a departure ATIS broadcast the QNH should be
included thereby allowing ATC to check that the quoted QNH is up-to-the-minute.
7.5.2 Aerodromes possessing ATIS, the hours of ATIS operation and the frequency
employed are published in the UK AIP.
7.5.3 ATIS broadcasts which should be no more than thirty seconds duration, will include
the following:
a) Message identification i.e. ‘This is Stourton Information Alpha’. Each message is
consecutively coded using the phonetic alphabet
.
B) Time of origin of weather report.
c) Weather report (see paragraph 2.2(a)–©).
d) Runway(s) in use.
e) Short term AIS information such as unserviceability of NAV AIDS, runway surfaces
etc.
f) Any other routine information useful to pilots operating at the aerodrome.

Basically Steve, The letter applies to which version of the ATIS or Weather information you have recvd.

For example, you may be setting up and when tuning your radio, you see that EGLL Tower is giving information BRAVO. You perform your preflight checks and finalise your route and then ask for clearance stating that you have information BRAVO on board. If it has been a few minutes since you checked the ATIS it may have changed and the Tower comes back and informs you that BRAVO is out of date and CHARLIE is now current. (The wind may have changed by 90 degrees and now instead of using 09L to take off you are using 27R) It is the controllers way of knowing that you have the latest information so therefore it is just a version number for the information report.

Hope that clears it up a little.

here is the simplest explanation:

when you change your frequency, a message pops up.Somewhere in the message, it will say Information (letter, eg Juliet) so that's what you copy)
