FS X
EHM-1703 Philip:
Okay, I'll play along! Here's my opinion. I agree with both of you (Sven and Peirre-Francois) to a point and can see both sides of the argument.
Here are some comments observations:
1) To be honest, I think the demo version will be far from the finished product. I think the reason Microsoft released the demo was to quell the speculation and scaremongering that has engulfed the FS community that we will all have to buy new PC's to run it. I think they have done a good job of doing this.
2) I think Microsoft are doing a great job of bringing FSX up to a standard that most of us are used to with our heavily expanded copies of FS9. Many of us have spent a small fortune on add-ons’ like Active Sky, Ground Environment, FS Passengers, FS Nav, Numerous Pay ware Aircraft and the list goes on and on to be told most of them will require a paid upgrade or a replacement version for FSX. (Very few are saying they will offer a product upgrade for free or that their product is compatible) Our investment in FS9 is not merely the 50 or so Euros that the boxed product cost, it is hundreds if not thousands that have been spent improving the boxed version of FS9 and we will now have to start again from "almost" scratch. If FSX does not run these products, I will run both versions side by side until such a time that FSX far out performs FS9. (Lets face it, the deluxe version of FSX will only cost the same as a couple of decent FS9 add-ons’!)
3) There are many subtle changes in FSX that improve our entertainment which we have not seen yet. The inclusion of "Fly by Wire" controls to allow for more accurate simulation of modern aircraft controls such as modeling the use of "Laws" to govern control surfaces and thrust. (Something which simply can not be modeled correctly on FS9) This is just one of the many subtle changes.
I think MS have done a great thing by putting out the demo and banishing all the doom and gloom that has been banded about us all needing new hardware. Unfortunately they released a pre production version that was never properly Beta tested and so had a few bugs and didn't show us as much as we wanted to see. (They have to keep the big guns back for the launch!) All in all, I love the demo, it has wet my appetite just enough to keep me from spending a fortune on new PC components but has me sitting on the edge of my captains chair waiting for October! Keep up the good work MS!
EHM-0744 Alex:
Maabaa a very good post I agree, however I did expect more from MS regarding the initial screenshots that were released. Lets see if the developer would be pissed then.
If the difference in graphics is due to a difference between the beta and the final version, I will stand corrected.
I doubt it though, and believe me, I wish itll happen. I like flight simulation as any of the people here do.
EHM-1703 Philip:
Alex, you have to take the screen shots with a pinch of salt as many of them were rendered to show how FSX will look on DirectX 10 hardware. Remember when FSX was initially announced, Windows Vista and DX10 were scheduled to be launched at the same time.
