FSX Display Settings

ok ok ok i know i said i wouldnt get it until next year but when i saw it looking at me from a shelf in my local Game store i just could not resist - so i am now the proud owner of FSX   I just flew from London City ( EGLC ) to Cardiff ( EGFF ) in a Learjet and i must say besides a little slowdown here and there i didnt see any of the problems that have arisen for most of you guys!

One question however - i had all my display settings set on Medium-Low ( e.g scenery, aircraft, traffic etc.... ) and was just wondering what you guys who have FSX think is the perfect balance for each category?? Medium-Low on each category for me seemed to work well but i was a little disappointed with the Aircraft quality and would like to move the slider higher but dont want this to upset the apple-cart so to speak......:s  So can you guys post what display settings you use??

Brian, before my untimely exit from the world of FSX I had my settings all set pretty much Med High but I had the Autogen turned down/off as this and the water effects are the frame rate killers. Try that, if no good, then have a look at the FSX Tweaks post I started. There is a lot of great info in there.

Brian try moving your global texture slider to very high this will improve the look of your aircraft with little change in the frame rates

But the settings in FSX greatly depends on your computer hardware specs,

Well, in my case *not meaning to brag* I have most of my settings set to High, as I have done alot of daring moves to make sure my comp. can handle the game. Only Javier knows of my secret!

Although, I do have autogen and water effects very low, as I think it's quite nice to have sparkly water, but I'd rather have a fast game rather than a slow game, so I'd reccomend about middle on most things

I also believe Aircraft should be quite low, and regular traffic quite low, as that's a BIG frame rate killer, however, I have Scenery, and Airport traffic Ultra High. I think that you'd get the best out of a poqwerfull system, which can just hold FSX!

Well now... I read somewhere (really can't remember where) that to run it maxed out, your going to be looking at "bleeding edge" hardware *this time next year*! To me, that speaks Vista, DX10, quad-core and the next next-gen from ATI/nVidia...

This is starting to annoy me. I'm just struggling to run my Captain Sim 757 and *was* considering the option of getting FSX, but now I'm finding out I need to get all these addons (and maybe even a new computer!!) with names I've never even heard of just to run FSX!

All I can say is that FSX is NOT in my virtual aviation 'career' anytime in the forseeable future...

When the previews were around the general gist was that FSX would be the showcase game for Vista ... no Vista but FSX is here. What's that about? I'm not going to hand over money until I have Vista in a dual core system with a decent DX10 GFX.

Phil, last I heard, the Vista "binary" is on the one DVD with the XP version. There's nothing else (other than Vista, of course) to buy...

Any of you'se that have actually stumped up for it care to comment (especially anyone that also has access to the Vista Beta programme)

Well, I am running it on Vista, it does run better, a few more FPS but the game looks identical. That said, I do have RC2 of vista and the driver support is pretty crud so I am getting a lot of artifacts and garbage graphics when running the game. Of course, DX10 support is not included and will be patched at a later date so don't run out and buy an Nvidia Gforce 8800 GTS card to get it going just yet!
