Connecting to Vatsim or IVAO

I only fly offline because i have never been bothered to learn how to connect to vatsim or ivao but now i would like to. I hear most people prefer connecting to ivao. can anybody point me in the right direction of a tutorial. i know how to connect to vatsim using FSINN and FScopilot but i connect and i cant seem to contact atc because nobody talks. can anybody help?
