Title: A gastronomical adventure: a New VFR tour throughout France
Post by: EHM-2387 Eric-Jan on December 02, 2014, 09:38:04 pm
As announced here: http://www.fly-euroharmony.com/forum/index.php/topic,7670.0.html (http://www.fly-euroharmony.com/forum/index.php/topic,7670.0.html),
We have a New tour throughout France.
This thread is for reactions to that announcement, and for getting together to perhaps fly in groups online.

Bonjour mes amis,

Just arrived in Chelles, Le Pin France. In four stages (EHGG-EHBK-ELLX-LFPH) I already brought my Cessna182T Skylane to the start airfield near Paris (I hate being late), where the goods to be transported already were unloaded from the truck. I told the guys to wait till next week, but they were in a hurry and couldn't make it during the weekend. So, to check if the contents of the crates I have to carry next week are ok, I opened one of them and took a bottle back to my hotel. I must say, it's not my favorite drink, but it does give me 'a taste of France'.

Hope to meet you (sober) on Mumble next week,

Peter (hiccup...hiccup)

If we fly together I'll expect to use one of them: Cessna 172, Cirrus SR20, Piper Cherokee Arrow III, Piper Seneca III or another possibilities... See you next week guys ;D

"Give Taste to France" ... that's what the four of us (Trevor, David, Gian and me) just did last evening while starting this tour flying from a small airfield in the south-east of Paris, called Chelles Le Pin, to our first destination Nantes. But we certainly did more than that: I'm convinced that we gave something else to the guy that was controlling Le Bourget approach: a bad headache! Le Pin actually is situated just outside his airspace, Class A airspace that is. Instead of setting course east to avoid that zone (I initially thought there was a D en E zone too), we flew straight in. Ooooops... Four small planes on a VFR tour were "kindly" requested to leave that airspace. Someone of us was so scared off that he almost flew into Germany, before setting course westbound.

What did we learn from this: stay out of Class A airspace, keep smiling all the way and don't put into practice the proverb: "When in France, do as the French do" (just a free interpretation).

Not bothered by any ATC on our way, we safely landed in Nantes.

It was a rainy evening, while we (David, Gian and me) flew from Nantes to Rouen. Nevertheless we enjoyed our tour and encountered some friendly assistance of Paris_CTR for a change, who guided us in safely at Rouen airport.

Because of the Christmas holidays I'll put a Doodle-link for the next flight on this forum in the first week of the new year.

In the meantime: a Merry Christmas and lots of flights in blue sky in 2015.

Hi Folks !
I was trying to make a flightplan in FS Navigator, but there are some airfields I could not find -
ex.  LFSD,  LFSA; LFLL;  LFDY;
are this special add ons ?
Is there a solution ?

Cheers

Hallo Franz,

If I've understood you correctly, you cann't find the mentioned airports, which are some small ones, in FS Navigator, but do they appear in your Flight Simulator? If not, what FS are you using (FSX or FS9?).
If they are present in your FS, it's FS Navigator that's probably not up to date. Have you evervtried Plan G for planning your flights?

I´m using FS9  and that mentioned airport don´t exist even in the flightsimulator.
I can´t load them !

Hallo Franz,

Because I don't have FS9 myself, I cann't check the existance of the airfields you mentioned. I designed the tour using FSX. Maybe someone else flying FS9 can verify if they exist, however two of them (LFSA and LFLL) are middle large airport which should appear in FS9. LFSD and LFDY are indeed smaller ones. I know from experience that Flightlogger accept an alternate destination in the vicinity of the original one within a certain range: LFQM instead of LFSA, LFBD instead of LFDY! I really don't know the exact distance.

But to be absolutely sure and to avoid disappointments, maybe Eric-Jan can tell you more when he reads this message.

I checked the entire tour before release against all supported sims (FDS9, FSX, XP9, and XP10) with a tool I wrote a couple of years ago (but only the XP10 database could change over time; the others are "static"). At the time I found no errors, so all ICAO codes should be present in FS9 as well. I am firing up FS9 on my laptop as I write this, because my true FS PC is disassembled at the moment. That takes a while, so I have plenty of time to type you an answer ;)

LFSD is present in my "virgin" copy of FS9, see LFSD.jpg You can just see LFSA listed on the top line in that same jpg.
I have checked and found LFLL in the same way.

LFDY, should not have been in the leg list. I should have replaced that one with LFCS as I discussed with Peter at the time. That was for this very reason: it does not exist in FS9... Apparently, I let that one slip through; apologies for that!
I modified the tour legs, but I am not sure what will happen with FL for those that have already assigned themselves this tour, when they get to leg 19. As there is just more than 10 nm between the two, FL will not accept landing on the one airport as having arrived at the other.

The only solution for all that fly FS9 I see at this moment is to fly to LFCS, and file a manual PIREP as if you flew to LFDY. Those that fly FSX or up, can fly to LFDY, as assigned, as it is in their scenery.
Other option is to un-assign and re-assign the tour, but that would erase your record of having flown the legs you have flown thusfar. So that would probably only be an option if you have only just started the tour.

But then there is still the other three airports that really should be in your default scenery, Franz. It looks like there is a different problem with your install, I'm afraid. No clue as to what, though ...

Hi guys in my FS9.1 I've: LFSD Lovgnic Ab (Dijon); LFSA Thise (Besancon); LFLL Saint Exupery (Lyon), but not LFDY, then I'll fly to LFCS Leognan-Saucats (Bordeaux)  ;D
Title: Re: A gastronomical adventure: a New VFR tour throughout France
Post by: EHM-2387 Eric-Jan on December 29, 2014, 01:39:05 pm
Once you guys get there, let me know what FL thinks of landing at LFCS. It might be that it approves of landing there instead of LFDY ("parked at destination" status), but I am afraid it's a touch too far apart. In that case, if you file a manual PIREP, I will approve it manually, and that's it for the flight itself. At the end of the tour, there's another thing: I expect that, if FL does not accept your landing at LFCS as "at destination", that also the automatic award system will not recognise the tour as being finished.
Should that be the case, then shout out, and I'll see what I can do manually...
This goes only for those that have already assigned themselves the tour, and are flying FS9. So far, I think it's three pilots, so that is manageable manually ;)
Anybody assigning the tour today or later, will have LFCS in their dispatch - assigned flights.

p.s. the Dropbox file looks to be for Xplane only, but that's not the case, I just forgot to change the filename.

Next Wednesday the 7th of January 2015 at 20:00 H Zulu is scheduled for the third leg of the "Give a taste to France" tour from Rouen to Vatry. Study the route carefully, because we'll be flying close to the class A airspace of Paris and at any time we must avoid possible ATC to get angry.

Old fashioned communication during our flight last evening from Vatry to Marc-en-Baroeul. Old Fashioned problems too to get a steady connection to one of the IVAP servers. That's why we left Vatry one hour later than was planned, what reduced my fuel level to a halve. Enough though left to make this leg. Unfortunately Mumble was down, so we had to communicate by means of the IVAP chatbox, which makes manual flying almost impossible. Typing and flying are two things that don't really match. I think that's why they invented the autopilot... and the copilot, the latter had a day off BTW
I do a lot VFR flying and in most countries it's obvious if and when to contact ATC if online. In France it's a totally different matter. Whether they don't like those small, tiny planes of ours and prefer the ones that fly IFR, or they're just afraid of these four who show up every week on their screen. Fact is that after we make contact with ATC, they just send us back to Unicom.

a little example of the conversation between the four of us, to illustrate:
..........
PHPBG>I switch to ATC now
EHM2589>rgr
EHM2589>LFEE or LFFF
PHPBG>LFFF
EHM2589>rgr
PHPBG>D you don't have to make contact with ATC

PHPBG>Sorry D
EHM1829>hahah
EHM2589>what a luck T -)
EHM2589>Gian is coming too -)
EHM2589>ça va Gian ?
PHPBG>It's a little bit confusing with French ATC; according to LFEE_ctr we don't have to contact LFF_CTR
EHM2589>ça va G, Mumble ne marche pas pour le moment
EHM2589>we're on the chatbox
EHM2589>only h/p rwy28 many problems

I was a bit late last evening (sorry for that) and when I got online I noticed David and Gian just took off from Marc-en-Baroeul airport. Because I already had prepared my flight and my C182T Skylane was itching to start this fourth leg of the tour and with a little extra power, I caught up on them very quickly. ATC all the way (Paris_CTR, Brest_CTR) and in this case, for a change, they were very friendly and helpful. Under perfect VFR conditions we viewed some beautiful scenery along the coasts of Haute and Basse Normandie and of course the harbour of Le Havre. Around 10:30 H we arrived safely at our destination, Carpiquet airport, Caen.

Next leg of the tour goes from Caen (LFRK) to Poitiers (LFBI, Biard)

I will be needing to shut down Mumble from Thursday on until over the weekend. The last bit of dry-walling and electrical stuff will then take place. We are out of the house from Thursday onward to not be in the way, and all power will be switched off during some time of that. To prevent this NAS from dying like my previous one, I am going to shut it down for that period of time. ;)
So that fits nicely with this flight :D

Have a good and safe flight!

P.S. Mumble will be up again Sunday evening, I hope.

It took a while before we finally had a take-off clearance from Brest_CTR. Obvious he was very busy handling other traffic in the region, a Boeing had to divert to Carpiquet Caen airport and had priority to land first. Nevertheless waiting at the holdingpoint for about thirty minutes made it all very real.

To make the landing in Poitiers (Biard airport) a little bit more exiting (no ATC to prevent us from doing that) we tried a simultanious landing: Trevor on rw21L, David rw21 and I headed for rw21R. Unfortunately Gian had a FS crash not long after his departure. >:( Frustrating, but I hope it doesn't discourage you from flying agian next week.  Besides there were only three runways available. :-[
It's a lot more difficult to fly in formation than you think. Furthermore it's almost impossible to make a final approach and take screenshots at the same time. We ought to practice this somewhat more in the future.

Nevertheless if you take your time to search for it, some screenshots below show Davids Piper and Trevors C172.

I'll try to think of switching on my NAS again ;)
It's still off, so Mumble is not working a.t.m., at least until this evening.

Should I forget entirely, Peter: you have my email address - drop me a line, and I will most likely see it on my phone.

Hi E.J. at the moment 1332 zulu doesn't work, I mean Mumble or Server, but I've a message: New version available. Version 1.2.8 is now released on sourceforge. Please go to SourceForge.net to download. Is necessary to install 1.2.8 or only server problem ??? Thanks :)

Hi David,

I would wait with the new version until after this evening, just to be sure. I re-started the server yesterday evening (around 1800Z, I estimate), so I think it will all work fine now (Peter just confirmed that to me).

I don't think the new version will cause any issues, but just to be sure I would advise to stay with 1.2.7 for this evening, because that was a proven working situation. After this evening, you'll have a whole week to upgrade and see if it all works (and repair things if some-why things get broken  ;)  :P )

Last evening we left Poitiers Biard at about 20:30 H. Trevor, David, Gian and me flew in formation from west to east and had a save landing in Dijon Longvic at 22:40 H. Although Bordeaux_CTR went online after we already left Poitiers, we didn't have to deal with that. We stayed low and out of classified airpsace. Along the way I tried to  get close to each one of us to take some screenshots. The results are shown below.

Congratulations to Gian. Since a long time he could finish this flight without any problem with his Flight Simulator. Keep it up, Gian.

We didn't mention it last evening and actually we didn't notice it at all, but now I realize that Gian has obviously overcome the problems with his Flight Simulator. For the second time in a row he didn't encounter any problems. The four of us did, though not with the FS but with the weather on the way. From Dijon to Reims we had a clear sky, but after that fog, that became thicker and thicker as we approached Amiens. In real life flying impossible and very dangerous to do, but we had to land at Amiens (Real pilots in real life don't have to deal with something called Flightlogger). Only Trevor flew in a totally different world and reported "runway in sight" at 2.5 nm distance. The rest of us flew in a grey world. Nevertheless, thanks also to the lighting of the runway, we managed to get our planes down safely on a desolate airfield.

The pictures down below are a little differeent than the ones before.I tried some panoramic shots.

Dense fog at Amiens made us (Trevor, David and me) decide to change our flightplan from VFR to IFR. At 9000 ft the world looked a lot clearer. Strasbourg Tower showed up on the screen long before we reached our destination. The poor guy had to wait a long time untill he could guid us in. Probably fell asleep while waiting for three of those light aircrafts that were crossing the north of France from west to east.

It's amazing, but after having flown eleven legs through mainly the Northern part of France, we - that is Trevor, Gian, David and me -must admit that French controllers do have a problem with us. One of the main attractions of flying online is of course having to deal with ATC. Most of the time, when we login IVAO, we see that there's ATC on line in the region we fly in. But for some reason, as soon as we are airborne, Control, Approach or Tower disappear from the screen, as if they know we're coming. That raises the question: are they scared of us or aren't they familiar or happy dealing with VFR flights? Because, in my opinion, we're very nice and polite guys, I think the  latter is the case. But luckily there're still French controllers who haven't heard of us; Clermont-Ferrand approach, tower and dispatch were online when we left Besancon. While we were on our way, one after the other disappeared from the screen, but two new, ignorent controllers showed up just before we reached their airspace. They did guid us in, but unfortunately without using the appropriate VFR vocabulary. Clermont-Ferrand Tower threw in the towel after the first one had landed, without any notice. Very disappointing.

Disappointing also for Gian who had to cut off his flight in the beginning because of a malfunctioning  headset. Hopefully next week this problem will be solved.

Below you'll find the links for our next leg: leg12 from Cleremont-Ferrand to St.Denis-de l'Hotel.

As I said last evening after our experiences with French ATC, I've placed a message on IVAO's forum, where controllers complaint about the behavior of pilots who deliberately disconnect from IVAP to avoid ATC.

Hallo Timo,

This tour is part of the nineteen tours that are available in the operiations section and as far as I know it will remain available all the time. So you can start and finish it whenever you want.

Title: Re: A gastronomical adventure: a New VFR tour throughout France
Post by: EHM-2387 Eric-Jan on March 10, 2015, 08:22:51 am
That is correct, Peter. In principle, all tours remain assignable. Once they have been on the board for several years, no-one is actively flying a certain tour, and a replacement tour is added, it might be that a tour is removed from the board (de-activated; always possible to re-activate later).
If you assign yourself the tour, you will find all legs in sequence added to your assignments (you can still fly other assigned flights, alternating between them and the tour). You can only assign one tour at a time, and you need to fly the tour legs in sequence.
These guys you read about here, have all started the tour when it was published, so it gets the idea of a series of online group flights (which of course adds to the fun factor ;) )
So if you would want to join them, you would need to start the tour from the first leg, and "catch up". You can, of course also just start the tour, and fly it at your own pace, either online, or offline. Using Flight Logger will very much ease the administrative work involved ;)

The "time limited" tours are called Events. Typically each leg then gets a 2-week window of time to be flown in, all legs nominally spaced 1 week apart. We play around a bit with the time frames to allow for holidays, and such. There's no active Event at the moment. There will be, probably somewhere in the May timeframe. Ideas are welcome per PM, facebook, email ;)

In spite of my problems with Mumble and later on with FSX, we managed to get in Orleans in one piece last evening, doing our 12th leg of this tour and succeeded to get some screenshots after all.

At St.Denis de l'Hotel airport in Orleans we were welcomed by an Airbus, who gave us a scrary show of how to handle a plane before landing. Finally he did land and placed his aircraft in a intimidate manner right in front of us. "Bienvenu a Orleans"!

Actually not the best conditions for flying VFR. In real life, I think, a pilot wouldn't have to hesitate to make the decision whether to take his plane out or not. A thick cloudlayer at 1000ft AGL and fog however didn't prevent us, daredevils as we are, to start our 13th leg of this tour through France. No ATC on our way to prevent us doing so. Further more we knew that after the Troyes VOR the fog would have disappeared and that the weather conditions at our destination were excellent.

Around 10:30 Hr we arrived safely in Metz and were a bit surprised to hear a new voice on Mumble. Timo joined us and showed us a beautiful new paint for the A2a Cessna172, he almost had finished. Nice job, Timo. I particular solicit the favour of a Euroharmony livery for the A2A C182T.

I hope some more Euroharmony pilots take Timo's example and join us on Mumble. Let's keep Euroharmony and online flying alive!

After seventeen legs flying in France, I think ATC is getting used to us four. If we had the idea that they, for some dark reason, tried to avoid us, yesterday evening Rennes approach and tower certainly proved otherwise. Friendly and thorough they guided us in and - as Trevor rightly noticed - in proper English too.

Still we've got four legs to go. Hopefully French ATC stays focussed.

p.s. afb06: Trevor ordered a fueltruck right after arrival. I wonder what kind of fuel?

Hi Peter what about for FS9 Scenery, no LFDY airport. LFCS or LFBD  ???
Thanks and hope to fly together and landing at the same airport... maybe Wednesday 22.

Neither David, I made a mistake to mention LFDY, because as some in the early days of this tour noticed already, it doesn't exist in FS9.  It must be LFCS,  Bordeaux Saucats at the southwest of LFBD.

By the way, we'll fly next wednesday the 22nd of April at 19:00h Zulu.

Though Gian's name appeared on the Mumble screen, unfortunately we didn't hear from him  during the whole flight from Rennes to Bordeaux. In spite of his little knowledge of the English language, as he texted us a few times, the controller on Rennes tower did his utmost to help us leave his zone in a proper manner. Around 10:30 PM Zulu we reached the small airfield of Bordeaux Saucats.

Indeed, I was ready to start (I was in fact the first to be connected on Mumble), but had again problems with FS and gave up.....leaving my computer open and forgetting to exit Mumble! That was my way somehow, to participate (silently) to the flight!
Hope better chance next week.
Cheers,
Gian

Leg19 took us four from the west (Bordeaux) to the south east (Montpellier) in the Languedoc-Rousillon on the coast of the Mediterranean. A short-term encounter with Montpellier tower was all the ATC we met during this flight.

We already noticed several times, in the foregoing legs, that one of us was flying in a completely different univers. Contrasting weather conditions and as the picture he took shows, confusing GA planes used by Gian and David with large Airbuses. Wondering what he'll see during our forelast leg to Corse. ::)

To prepare for leg21 to LFKJ (Campo dell'Oro) you might need files from the following link:

Hi folks, missed the flight due to slight Probs with internet connection here in Holland.
My son is connected via KPN; it was down from 11:00am yesterday till
17:15 to-day, no worries, will have it complete in the next couple of days. ;)

All worked fine for David and me last evening. So just the two of us made the 21st leg of the tour to Campo dell'Oro on Corsica.

Because of the fact that I'm away from home and my home computer I'm unable to give you the screenshots I made.. I'll be back next week and hope to give you the Doodle-link around the 14th for our last leg to Marseille.

Till then,

Peter

Although it was more than a week ago, I won't withhold you the screenshots I made during the forelast leg from Montpellier to Campo dell'Oro on Corse, a flight that David and I made together. Since then I spend a very pleasant holiday with nice weather, which puts me in a optimal condition to undertake the last leg of this tour from Corse to Marseille. Hopefully you guys will join.

Our final flight of this "Gastronomical Tour" in France started on Corse, Campo dell'Oro, Ajaccio with a little surprise: a "new (online) kid on the block" joined us, namely Bruce. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, he disappeared from the screen halfway Marseille. Nevertheless he's visible on the 4th screenshot, while we're waiting to take-off. Too bad also that Gian wasn't with us on this memorable flight.

The first three shots show how beautiful the island of Corse is. A few hours before I made a small trip around the island.

Though we had to deal with lots of different qualified traffic controllers during this entire tour, Marseille_App surely did show us how to guid VFR-flights in. A pleasant closure of a tour I loved to fly together with Trevor, David and Gian. Thanks guys.

So I've got almost two weeks time to prepare myself and my aircraft for our next adventure: Alaska, The Final Frontier. Still have to make up my mind about which plane to use.

Meet you all on Mumble!

Hello Peter, David and Trevor,

It's pity I missed the last hop of the gastronomical adventure! I flew it this morning, "for the honour". This time for sure, Trevor could not see me in my beuatiful Airbus  ;)
Again, many thanks Peter for your screenshots all along the tour and your involvement in organizing it. I am keen to be on line for the first leg of the Alaska Adventure with all of you and anyone who will be joinging us.
Cheers
Gian
