Title: Tropical Traders PP Event begins on the 21st!

The Tropical Traders ProPilot Event begins in Singapore on 21st December!

It's a 6500nm jaunt in 22 legs across Southeast Asia in the wonderful DC-3 - sign up via the banner on the front page and post any questions you may have here ;)

(A couple of legs are missing from this route map as they didn't appear in the GCMap database)

Signed up!  ;D

Seems the GCD column in the legs table is a bit off for the less known airports; something to correct in the a/p database? (and aliasing?)
I'm sure it will be fixed before Event starts ;)

Looking forward to proppig through the tropics!  ;D ;D

Hmmm, sir!

All routes wrong distance displayed. 7,936 nm, 0 nm, etc.

Excample:
5   WADD Bali Intl   WATO   274 deg   7,936 nm

And calculated the routefinder:
Computed route from BALI /NGURAH RAI (WADD, WA) to MUTIARA II (WATO, WA): 5 fixes, 281.7 nautical miles

What is problem?

"unknown" or not-recognised ICAOs get calculated as if they were on 0 degrees longitude, 0 degrees latitude (somewhere off the West coast of Africa, on the Equator, of course). So, WSSS may be known, the distance to any unknown ICAO, from WSSS, will result in just about 8000 nm GCD.

And "unknown" means here that the airport is not yet in the (timetable) database, so there's no GPS location known (yet). Not all 35.000 ICAO codes in the world are in there, 'cause otherwise the timetable database would become too large to handle comfortably.

A little medling with that database will fix the problem, and I'm quite sure someone of the MT will do his utmost to get the database up-to-date before the Event actually starts.

(this is one of the side-effects of creating an event that visits some very small airfields, which makes this event one of my personal favourites ;))

Basically the distances shown are auto-generated by the Event page script, not input by us, so as E-J says they are reliant on correct information being in the database.

It will be corrected once Alexander sees the issue so don't get too hung up on it please ;)

Great initiative! Have to master the DC3 first though , but there's enough time to practice. For those who want to fly these legs online and together, visit the next page: http://www.doodle.com/xd4ggeug9mimxnty (http://www.doodle.com/xd4ggeug9mimxnty)

Not sure whether I will take this on or not .I DO like the dc3 though and that livery may an old one but its very nice indeed .

WELL DONE Guys for continuing to take your own valuable time to make sure that interesting flight challenges remain for  EHM pilots.

Jolly good!

Not sure when I will start the first leg, yet, Peter, because of holidays and such. But I'm sure I will :)

I might even buy myself the x-plane plane for this event...

Thanks for the feedback Peter and Andy, glad you're looking forward to the Event :)

Anyone not too familiar with DC-3 operating techniques will find some useful material on the MAAM-SIM (http://www.maam.org/flightsim/enhance/r4d_enhance.htm#MANUALS AND INSTRUCTIONS) website - their DC-3 is a fantastic payware version for MSFS - and they are kind enough to provide lots of free downloads of operating manuals and videos that show you how pilots operate the real plane so even DC-3 buffs will find something they didn't know about here ;)

It used to be so that you could select a time zone for yourself so that you can fill in in your local time. But now I don't see that selection anymore.
Could it be that Doodle selects your time zone, based on your browser reporting your location?

{EDIT} In the Doodle help file I read:
Quote
Enabling time-zone support
When scheduling an event with classic view (basic calendar):
At Wizard Step 2 (after selecting the dates and clicking "Next") you see a link "Enable time-zone support" (above time fields). Click this link to activate time-zone support.

When scheduling an event with calendar view:
At Wizard Step 2 you see a pull down with the time-zones above the calendar grid. Time-zone support is already activated. You can change the time-zone here manually. So do check if your correct time-zone is shown!

Doodle will automatically select the time zone corresponding to a participant's location (IP-Address) but allows to manually change it afterwards. With the iPhone App the time-zone support is activated automatically as well.
:)

If you are interested in the DC3 then you should visit The DC3 Hanger http://www.douglasdc3.com/index.html (http://www.douglasdc3.com/index.html) There are all sorts of luvvly things for you DC3 enjoyment  i.e. alternative panels (equipped with updated autopilot ,radios etc ,IFR capable) if you find the default autoP a bit hard to workout.
You can get some stonking good sounds ,and even flame and smoke effects for your aircraft on startup.
The sounds are particularly memorable.
All this stuff is for the default FS9 DC3
(as far as i know)
cheers Andy ;)

For anyone using X-Plane 9 to fly this Event, E-J has created an addon scenery file which adds certain of the Event airfields which are not present in X-P 9 by default.

To download this please go to the Downloads section of the Forum and look under X-Plane ;) (I have not added a direct link to maintain security of the Downloads area for logged in members only)

And remember: this is a ProPilot Event!
So you need to make sure your PP location is your departure airport for each leg.

For now, this means you need to fly to WSSS, or set a deadhead to WSSS, before you can actually fly the first leg (this also goes for all consecutive legs, of course).
Just a friendly reminder ;)
Happy flying!

Hi David and Dirk,

Untill now you two are the only ones, that signed in for a joined online 'Tropic Trader Tour' flight. Because there's obviously no match to fly the three of us together, I suggest that Dirk and I fly the first leg on Saturday 22th december at 13.00 GMT and David and I on Thursday 27th december at 19:00 GMT. I really don't mind flying the first leg twice. Gives me a great opportunity to practice.

naturally, anyone who wants to join us on either dates is cordially welcome!

Peter

Maybe I'll join in on the fun on Saturday; depends a bit on Christmas shopping needs ;)
If so, then it will be a small surprise. Otherwise, I will try to join you guys on the Company Channel during some time near the end of your flight. Would be a try-out for me  :D

[EDIT]: Saturday seems to work out well for me  ;D
I might be a little late to the party, but I'll do my best to minimise that.

And for those that missed the posting on the subject of our Company Channel, a little reminder:

Don't forget to share your screenshots and trip reports here on the Forum ;)

As soon as I opened up my throttles to take off, I got "disconnected by the network"; also no Mumble on my FS PC ...
I've got some things to sort out ... :(

For those of you flying the Event on X-Plane 9.7: if you have already downloaded the addon scenery package from the download section of the forum, please do so again.

I have added one more airport that I had previously overlooked as being absent in XP9.7. Corrected that ;)
Just unzip the downloaded file over the previous one.

For all other X-Plane 9.7 pilots flying this Event (still time 'till tomorrow to join the fun ;) ): Goto the download section for X-Plane, and download the attachment to the post that announces the addon scenery. Unzip it in the "Addon Scenery" folder of X-Plane.
No need for X-Plane 10 pilots to upgrade their scenery. All airports are accounted for in that sim.

Hope to meet you then,

Well,it looks like all the pilots who were able to make it to the end of this marathon journey have arrived safely :)

Congratulations to everyone who made it to the end in New Zealand and well done to those who made it part or most of the way round ;)

Let us know how you enjoyed it and any suggestions to help us as we plan the next PP Event for the summer...

Great job, David! Unfortunately I wasn't able to finish the tour because of the two and a half weeks holiday. Maybe a suggestion for the developers of those tours which have a timelimit: extend the time to f.i. three weeks, especially during holiday periods! It's frustrating not to finish a tour like this!
But I did enjoy our online flights with the Traders all these weeks very much!

Enjoyed the tour a lot, especially flying a plane I don't usually fly. Learnt a lot.  Thanks for a great event.
I was lucky this time with being able to finish the event. I had to give up on some of the previous events as I am away for long periods quite often.

Hi All, i would also like to thank all involved with this tour, it was a very well thought out tour. with some good landings in remote places, as usual the DC3 was a great plane for this type of tour, was not able to fly on line much this tour due to home commitments, some data for the flight are as follows.

Distance flown 6635.6 nm
Total hours 40h 42m
Fuel burn 31172lb
Average fuel burn per hour 765.8lb
Average speed 163kn

The award is all set up and I have seen it on at least one pilot's avatar so I'm not sure why it's not appeared for everyone who finished the Event.

Alexander / Murray - any thoughts on this?
