Title: 2006-11-25 Alpine Autumn
Post by: EHM-0654 Murray on November 11, 2006, 12:55:43 pm
In almost our last event of 2006, we invite our pilots to cross the Alps. Simple enough you might think, but to make it challenging we ask that you fly VFR, with real-world/IVAO weather and in a slow, single engine, unpressurized prop!

The event begins in the foothills on the Italian side of the Alps at Aosta (LIMW) and then we make our way across the backbone of Europe to La Veze (LFQM) in France; as the crow flies a little over 100nm, but you can expect to be traveling much further than that.

No proscribed route as this is visual all the way. Terrain following is suggested when/where possible to allow you to stay in the thicker oxygen rich air that your engine will appreciate.

Charts/info on the Online Flying pages. Use this thread for discussion.

Hahaha Matt... :)

No

;) Anyhow, the whole point of this VFR fly-in is to get pilots flying planes they like (Jabiru 2 for me...) in the challenging environment of the Alps. Should you want to fly around the Mont Blanc (sommat Bianco in Italian...) you'll be most welcome to.

As long as it's single engine prop and unpressurized Tim, yup.

Sounds like fun Murray ... any chance you could help out by posting a short list of acceptable and interesting aircraft for this flight?

Wow, that *could* be one heck of a long list Phil... but off the top of my head...

Most Cessnas are unpressurized SEPs (and both the 172 and the 182 are "default" with FS)
My personal fav, the Jabiru 2, is a "homebuild" that flies beatifully
In similar style, there's the Europa, another homebuild that flies nicely
If you like "interesting" there's the Rutan LongEZ (ee zee) which is a little twitchy but immense fun

My advise, hit AVSim or Mike Stone's website and find yourself some SEPs, give 'em a fly and find one you really like...

A suggestion, shouldn't we use the VFA aircrafts from EHM ? Or, are they too small (or too weak) for the event ?

Regards,

That's this Sunday folks ;)

1500Z, which should be late enough for those that are busy in the morning (I don't do the whole God thing myself, but others may), yet early enough that we'll still have daylight to fly in.

If the real-World (AS/Jeppessen as appropriate) isn't good for VFR,  run with "Clear Skies" (or "Cold Fronts" for a little challenge).

@Christian: If you wanna follow me, that'll be OK. I'll be in a Jabiru 2 (came from AVSim originally), cruising at 100KIAS or thereabouts.

My thanks to Luis, Javier and Jim for being there, shame you couldn't land with us Jim, was great fun flying the circuit while Jav and Luis landed.

@Javier
I tried to send a U2U msg, but i think i did not success with it.

I see in your pictures that you have a dark GPS image.

Try hit the terrain button on gps (TERR) and you will see as it is more easy to see mountains and valleys, a big help for situations of low visibility, like that one on Aosta valley.
