Title: 2014 Spring-Summer Event on finals
Post by: EHM-2097 Andrei on March 25, 2014, 07:17:31 pm
Time to prepare yourselves for our next event!

But this time too it's guessing first, flying next, so don't start your engines yet. Moreover, being a little frustrated that you guessed too quickly the previous event, I'll try to make it a little trickier this time (evil grin).

First clue, however, should be (relatively) easy to figure out:

No doubt... must be Singapore, with the Sepreme Court building with it's spacy rooftop!
No clue what so ever, where it's leading to!
A third hint perhaps.....?

Glad to help Peter, here is clue #3 - but beware, things are getting a little abstract here:

And yes, as you - both - guessed, previous clue was Singapore all right!

David's suggestion is going the right way but not quite to the right spot, so here comes clue #4 (but I must warn you that if it seems too easy to be true then... it probably isn't):

Still, haven't got the faintest idea, so a wild guess it is: Camelback Mountain, Phoenix, Arizona!

Please, don't make it to hard on us, Andrei! ;)

In the meantime, here goes the next clue.

Title: Re: 2014 Spring-Summer Event on finals
Post by: EHM-2758 Peter on April 03, 2014, 08:53:56 am
Last and final shot, Andrei:

Has it got anything to do with these two airlines: Northwest Airlines (compass pointing north-west), a major United States airline founded in 1926 and absorbed into Delta Air Lines (camel and pyramid) by a merger, which made Delta the largest airline in the world.

The link between Phoenix, Singapore and the tastefully looking cake remains a riddle to me, however.

EuroHarmony is commerating the 25th Anniversary of the Boeing 747-400 series jumbo airliner?

Clues:
(1) 25th Birthday Cake signifies the introduction of the -400 series 747 in 1989
(2) Phoenix AZ was the destination of the first in service flight of the 747-400 (departed Minneapolis)
(3) The Compass pointing Northwest, Northwest Airlines was the launch customer of the 747-400
(4) Singapore was the departure airport for the first "International" flight of the 747-400 by Singapore Airlines (Singapore to London)
(5) Camel (ignoring the pyramid) representing a clue as to the "hump" shape of all 747 aircraft.

Shot in the dark but at least some of the clues fit the theory.
Cheers all!

Nooo! Definitely you are way too good for my humble clues! Next time I will post only blank "pictures" and maybe you will not be able to guess  ::)

To be more precise, Scott managed to perfectly see through ALL my clues and is 6 times right (5 for the clues and one for the general idea).

Stay tuned for the event details, it will most likely be published this week-end.

And I thought the compass meant a 50 degree W variation ...
That would need to be quite near the pole. But probably somewhere in Siberia, or so.

Congratulations, Scott! You're too good for this game ;)

Ha actually yes.  ;D  It was the Singapore clue that kinda through me off. I felt the "first international flight" explanation was the weakest of my theories. When the compass appeared I had less doubt.  ;)

The event is now live.

Just for the kicks, this should have been my final clue (if Scott had not guessed everything already), what do you do of it? It could be very easy... or not, depending on how much attention you pay to details.

Waiting for Dom or E-J on this one, I think it's only natural to add a KATL-KPAE timetable flight but the timetable is one thing I never messed with  8) so I am not quite sure how to do it.

On the other hand gentlemen, is it me or no one did reply to my final clue in the previous message?

I have no idea about your last clue, Andrei. Not even with the knowledge of the answer of the overall riddle, let alone if I did not know it was about the 744.
What I did manage is to punch in a KATL KPAE flight (and back, just o be sure no-one ends up stranded there after the event). Made it a Class 6 flight, so pilots can choose from a wider variety. Will be 744 for now, of course, but after the event ...

As stated previously, this could actually be a very easy one... but probably not for seasoned EHM pilots who do not visit often the fleet pages nowadays:

Only five days left until the Event starts and I see there are several pilots a looong way away from KPAE ;)

Is anyone thinking about a group flight to the starting line or perhaps for the first leg on our 13th birthday?

Untill the 12th of May I'm having a hopefully wonderful vacation in the south of France, so I'm unable to make it for the first leg of the Spring-Summer Event. The legs of this tour are in my opinion somewhat long to fly (together, online) on a weekly evening. Nevertheless I hope that we can continue our joined flights online on a different moment.

Meet you on Mumble!

After June, my PPL theory will (hopefully) be done. Until then, I just can't promise anything regarding sim flying. I'll probably start the event in the odd "off hours", as I find them.

Had a very relaxed holiday in the south of France. And though sunny days with an average of 23 degr., good food and of course perfect wine are important ingredients to make living as enjoyable as possible, I did miss my weekly joined online flights!

So, being back in cold and rainy Holland, some increase in weigth and completely sober  ;), I made my belated first flight of the Event today. I really don't have a clue how far you guys have managed to fly yet, but is there a possibility that we join up for leg 2 or next ones? I guess that flying during the evening isn't an option, because of the length of the legs., unless we start very early.

I wait for your suggestions and try to make the second leg sometime tomorrow.

Meet you on Mumble!

Peter.

Hi Peter, Gian and me were flew the first leg. For the moment 4 Queens of the skies are in Anchorage and 5 in Phoenix. For me is almost impossible to fly leg 3 PANC-RJAA these days, but who knows ::). I'm free  ;D  Thursday 15.05.14 0700 - 1500 zulu, Monday 19.05.14 1030 - 1500 z, Friday 23.05.14 0830 - 1500 z. And of course some days after 1900 zulu, for instance Wednesday 14, Thursday 15, Monday 19, Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 but not before 1900 zulu as you know...
Hope to see you for the third leg or next ones with Gian, Trevor, E-J, Andrei... ;)

Hello Peter,

welcome back home Peter! I see that you resumed "work" immediatly. As you have probably seen, a number of us are already sitting at RJAA. It would be nice to plan the RJAA-VHHH flight as a group sometime during next week... but not too late in the evening....it should be roughly 4 hour flight...I've read that David can not make it before 19.00Z....that means we should have a lot of coffee on board...Let's see how things will develop....

Hope to see you then ;)

Thanks Gian and David for your response! Because of the long duration of these flights, it seems a bit hard to pick a suitable time to make a flight together online. Still, I've given it a try and placed some days and times from the 27th of May (only during the day) in the next Doodle-link: http://doodle.com/7scr2di39u57ypd6 (http://doodle.com/7scr2di39u57ypd6)

It took me a while (a long weekend of leisure!) to publish these pictures, after we  (David, Trevor and me) had finished the fourth leg from Tokyo to Hongkong. Nevertheless the screenshots show the heavy ones of Trevor and David and... the very tiny  B738 I flew. For some reason I couldn't get the PMDG747 running properly on my W8.1 machine and I hate to fly the default one. Still the distance of this leg and the next 4 ones are within range of the B738, as long as there's no one on board ( I threw all my passengers and crew out ;) )

The Doodle-link for the next flight: leg 5 VHHH Hong Kong Intl WSSS Changi: http://doodle.com/58dywuiv8gmqqfsk (http://doodle.com/58dywuiv8gmqqfsk)
Since this leg is about 1500nm long, I supposed we could give it a try during the evening!

Good to see you guys got to fly together again! And nice to see some graphical feedback too :)

I'll be having my last Air Law lesson next Thursday. After that, there's one more exam training session, and of course the exam itself. No other theory courses to go to; I have passed 6 out of the 7 exams. So next thursday is the last of the mid-week evening theory sessions, so it looks like my calendar will show some more flying time available in the near future :)
I have only flown two legs of this event, so I need to do some catching up. But I'm on my way!

Hi,

Can you please include your EHM-ID in your posts as it makes it much easier to work out who you are :)

(A short time later) I see from searching your previous posts that you are EHM-2684 and you are shown at WSSS so you should be able to fly the leg from WSSS to VOBG (not VOBL as you put in your post?). When you load Flogger does it ask to update scenery etc?If so, do you click YES?

If you can provide a bit more detail we will have a better chance of working out what's wrong for you ;)

Saturday or Sunday morning should work for me....Evenings these days are booked for the world Cup... ;)

Any chance to have it organized? By the way, my FL indicates VOBL and not VOBG....as indicated in the description of the event...Any idea how this should be dealt witH? It would be frustrating completing the flight to VOBG and then find out that you cannot send the flight log...after 4 hour flight... :-[
loooking forward to some assistance,

Hi.
I had the same problem.

David and Gian
I created "AF2_VOBL.bgl". It is in Annex

Try to paste the "AF2_VOBL.bgl" to Addon Scenery\Scenery folder.
When you load Flight Logger update scenery.
I'm not sure if it will work. I use FSX. But you can try.

The thing is that in real life, VOBL does exist, as does VOBG. Both near Bangalore, VOBL to the south, and VOBG to the north. So they are both existing airports, only not in any sim (not in MSFS, but also not in XP)

I think it's best to re-route the Event to VOBG, and avoid these issues alltogether. (Which I actually now see as the consensus, and marked "done" in one of the management board threads; and on the site, admin, maintain events, there is VOBG as well. Maybe we need to re assign the Event to the contestants to get their leg lists updated, or work some behind-the-scenes database magic).

Trevor and David,

I'll be there on Sunday morning. I'm gonna try to (hopefully) download the file for FL in advance....In case that results unsuccessful,  I will have to rely on you guys to guide me "via Mumble"....Be prepared to be patient...Thanks in advance  :)

Maybe T or G will complete the ride  ::)

Hello,

Unfortunately, I could not complete the flight on line with D and T yesterday morning  >:(. but only in the afternoon (alone...). Trevor traced me on IVAO and explained to me on Mumble why I could not file my flight log......(database confusion between VOBG and VOBL, in spite of having downloaded VOBL scenery to be able to start the flight.....Rather complicated and frustrating. Therefore I still appear sitting at WSSS while my FL recognized me as "arrived and parked" at destination....but "denied" me the right to file my log..
Trevor said that the issue wad brought to Andrei's attention and that it will probably be solved soon...I hope then to have that leg validated. I tried to modify the coordinates for the arrival place, but found myself in the middle of the ocean, on the North of Colombia  (D&T will probably understand what I mean  ;)...Anxious to know the outcome and hoping  won't have to repeat this 4 hour flight!
Thks for your help
Cheers,

Gian

The original problem with VOBG vs. VOBL is fixed as well now.

The legs were originally defined with "VOBL" and when we changed to "VOBG", we did not realize that the old (aka wrong) code would still hang out in some web site tables. We just updated those too and everything should be fine now.

Pilots may receive an error message and FL4 will propose to start a new flight (which is the RIGHT thing to do). Then the correct code will show up in green. If this error message does NOT appear, it is still better to start a new PP flight.

Oh, and just in case you wonder why some pilots did not have this problem, it's those who joined the event after the legs were changed.

Your PP location was reset, because  VOBL no longer exists. I tried to relocate you to VOBG, but somehow that did not work correctly on my iPad (no laptop or PC available at the moment)
Maybe you could set a deadhead to VOBG? That should make the flight lockable again for you.

Setting a deadhead would-be be the thing to do for all pilots having used the VOBL BGL Solution to get. out of WSSS.

Somehow, I managed to move Gian to VOBG too, but Trevor's PP location got stuck at 04UT (the first one in the list, because VOBL no longer is in the list there). Not sure why it worked for one, but not for the other. Message said changes would take effect only after the pilot has loged out and in again, so maybe: Trevor, you need to log out and in to the website for your PP location to miraculously change to VOBG. Otherwise a deadhead to VOBG will get you there within 24 hours ...

I will fly the leg WSSS-VOBG this evening, but I'll be flying offline for a while.
I am using the default FSX 747, with vasFMC in order to be able to fly some real routes, FMC-wise. That FSX default G430 just won't do for IFR flying.
But as I just re-installed vasFMC (haven't used it in over three years), I am still a bit rusty as to procedures and control. I am just not confident enough that I will be able to promptly and correctly respond to ATC during the take-oof, climb, descend, and landing phases.
Plus: I'll want to use accellerated time during cruise, otherwise I won't get any sleep before the last working day of the week. And that too is not really accepted on IVAO, of course...

Once I build up some more confidence with vasFMC, you'll find me flying heavies online again.  ;D

Did WSSS-VOBG yesterday, but I somehow cannot get used to the Airbus Autopilot philosophy, I guess. Stalled 3 times at FL150, each time resulting in a dive to approximately 2500ft  :o :o
PAX were not happy with those moves, but in the end they all got off the plane alive, which should count for something too, right  ::)

Anyway: I will be using VOBG-OMDB as a training flight ( = offline ) too.

Maybe I'll join you later on in the Event (if there are legs left to fly ;)). I will anyway only be flying on weekdays, in the evening, and not on Wednesdays. So maybe I'll plug in Mumble on Tuesday anyways ...

*#$#$#$&!!!

I kinda have the departure bit under control by now, but the arrival bit keeps throwing me unexpected surprises. (Would be weird if it were expected surprises, I guess, huh?)
I have flown off-line all the way to TNCAM already, and there I needed three attempts to actually land the plane. On the first attempt, the auto-throttle kicked back in, because the Airbus-based FMC works differently than the Boeing FMC I am used to. So no matter how hard I applied the brakes, it just revved up to 105% N1 to reach those 140 knots that were dialled in previously. => Go around. Then, vasFMC crashed, so I was "convicted" to the Out-of-the-Box FSX GPS (G430). Which is OK, because at least the approach procedures are in there. So  "vectored" myself to the IAF again, and by then I had already selected the approach to rwy09 (...). Coming up on minimums, the aircraft started turning right; performing the missed approach procedure. Apparently, it defaults to a missed approach, unless you uncouple the autopilot before that decision point.
As that was too close to the runway to correct, I let the 180 degree turn roll itself out, and "vectored" myself to the IAF again, for a third attempt. During that attempt, the landing went well, only the reversers would not kick in. I found out later that my throttle quadrant was the culprit here; the button assigned to deploy the reversers does not work every time... :( But I managed to stop before the water, nevertheless, so I could dock the plane at the new terminal building, and that was it.

Still, I would not want to encounter that on-line, with ATC present. So I'll just keep on training offline for a bit. Maybe I'll join in on the VOBG-OMDB leg with you guys, next Monday, if I feel confident enough to fly the plane. Chances of ATC are not that great, for that leg. And I'll probably cut it short a bit (log off before OMDB), because my alarm clock goes at 05:20 the next day, and 1900Z departure is 2100LT for me, soa 4-hour flight won't leave me much sleeping time - and that on  Monday already...

Maybe I'll be on Mumble on Tuesday evening for a bit. I'll be flying, but off-line (still not enough confidence in my 747 flying skills).

I have progressed on to TNCM already, and as of Tuesday, TNCM-KMIA is open. Nice short hop, relative to the other legs in this event. And then the last leg the week after. I need to complete that one that week, because I'll be on holiday from after that week onwards. So I want to finish the event before my holidays.

We will try to fly the next really long-haul one EHAM-TNCM Thursday 31 start @ Schiphol around 0700 Zulu or Saturday 02 around 0830 Zulu.

If any other PP long-haul pilot like to join us, keep in touch on this thread.

Indeed EHAM-TNCM is a long haul (around 9 hours....)...
As far as I am concerned, I would be ok to fly the last leg next week (29, 30, 31 and maybe 1/8....). Hope it will work for other members of the "usual" team.
It would be great completing the tour with a group flight!
We keep in touch ;)

Strong headwinds meant relatively low groundspeed. Man that is a looooonngg flight. I am just not made for long haul! Hehe  ;D

                Hi Folks
Congratulations on completion E-J; yes 7 hrs is a fair old trudge. ;)

It was third time lucky with take-offs at EHAM yesterday morning. :( Firstly, after about 10 minutes of flying, David noticed i had
selected the wrong flight on FLogger ; the day before I had booked a charter flight EHAM-EGLC, which had still to be done. :-[
My second attempt was aborted on take-off due to the main instrument screen's blacking out; probably due to a involuntary Key-press.
Anyway I put it down to an age thing.  ;D
Apart from that, a good time was had by all.

David mentioned, TNCM_APP was on-line; a welcome sight as it was busy with inbound flights.

As for the next leg D, tomorrow evening will do fine, 2/8 19:00z

And not sure if is possible to fly KMIA-KPAE at 1900 zulu, because is another long-haul as E.J. said (7 hours). Only possibilities for the last one are: 05.08 (start between 1400 - 1500 zulu) or 12.08 (start between 1100 - 1200 zulu)

With Andrei across the finish line, we have no more contestants that are eligible to complete the Event. All others have stranded at other legs than can be flown today.
Congrats to all 7 out of 14 participants that managed to fly all 12 legs within the designated time frame, and on PP!

Also, a big thank you for those pilots that got stuck somewhere down the line, mostly because of time restrictions. This event was characterised by longer legs, which (of course) are more difficult to plan in between every day real-life buzz. Especially so over the summer holiday season. I hope you enjoyed those legs you did get to fly.  :)

I hope you all enjoyed flying the Queen of the Skies.
Happy landings!
