FS2004 Tweaking to 45 fps!
« on: January 01, 2007, 03:25:57 pm »
Hi guys,

I friend of mine just told me one thing that increase dramatically the frame rate on the FS2004.

Install the .NET Framework 3.0
and
Uninstall the .NET Framewok 1.1

I am currently flying but i will test it out as soon as I finish my flight.

Can some of you test it out too ?

Regards,

I have the .NET framework 3 installed, but I have never before removed the old versions :$. I'd always been warned away by M$' persistance that 'removing this program may stop other programs from functioning correctly'. Guess the new version is intended to replace the old version :$ Thanks, will try it out.

EDIT: I have sucessfully removed .NET 1.1, but Bill Gates is being very insistent that I should not remove .NET 2.0. Is he right?

I installed it too, so now have 2.0 and 3.0 If I am right, these 2 versions were both came in the 3.0 package.

Anybody knows if the .NET version have any common things with main Service Pack ? I just updated to SP2 last week but I do not feel any major changes. Hopefully with this new .NET package the system became even better ... although did not feel any change in FS. Still 10FPS only in the measured scenario.

I can confirm there is a FPS increase - i have my frames locked at 24 fps (seing as the Human Eye can't tell the difference between 24 and 100 fps).

I now constantly get 24FPS while in the air, and around 20 - 22 on the ground :)

However i still think that .NET 3 is still a Pre-Release version (NET FX3).

Hi,

I confirm too. Got a major increase on the FPS rate.

Also, the .NET 3.0 is the final one already Conrad ;) ..

Well, I downloaded the "dotnetfx3.exe" from a software site, and it was called "pre-release final version".

But really, no improvement in FPS at me !

Should I remove version 2.0 too, or just version 1.1?

Thanks for this! I have gained about 3-4 FPS all over. Along the same lines, check this Windows XP Optimisation guide for general system optimisation - this gained me about 5 FPS, but I realise now that my PC was in a total mess before I used it.

Hello Iain,

you should not remove the "old" .NET Versions since .NET Framework Versions is not to be replaced by newer Versions!

There are programs written for 1.1 and newer programs written for 2.0 - so it is normal to have several versions of .NET on your system.

FS is not written on .NET and runs independent of it so .NET Framework does not have any influence on FS - maybe there are some other applications (i.e. Active Sky) that benefit from the new .NET version and that causes the  frame increase in Flight Simulator.

Cheers,

Well, I have to disagree a little. I browsed inside the packed content, and I found a brand new XML engine inside the .NET package. Maybe that helps to improve gauges, effects, etc to work.

I hardly use any other addons in FS - except for Scenery, Aircraft & FS Flight Keeper, and i have seen an increase in frames :)

Perhaps it is a miracle ;D

@Robert

Believe me, Robert (and nobody less a person than Hans Hartmann, the programmer of famous Addons like Flight1 ATR and DA Piper Cheyenne confirmed it), .NET Framework has no effect on MSFS.

Hmm - it is also to do with how Compenents in XP are streamed to the memory, i doubt it has any effect on FS as you say, but more of an effect on the Components in the OS itself ;)

FS2004 uses MSXML4 weather you use .NET 3.0 or a different version. Says Hans Hartmann. And I believe him ;)

Hi,

Miko, maybe it's an indirect consequence. Maybe using the .NET framework 3.0 it optimizes other things that are not directly used by the FS but are indirectly used by it. For instance, some components from the directX library are upgraded when you install the .NET framework 3.0. ...

I know that the FS is developed in non-safe mode, so I understand your point. But, one thing is sure, and it's a fact: The FS really gets some performance improvements when doing that ;D ...

I agree with you Bruno,

my point was exactly what you said - seems to be an indirect effect.
