HELP

Hi folks,

I thought we could organize a small fly-in for the opening leg of the event. It takes about only 2 hours. We could do it on IVAO on monday or tuesday at 18:00Z / 19:00 BST / 20:00 CET.

As ATC is not excepted, it will be a quiet event...so anybody can come ;)  ...even some non-event flyers departing/arriving at New York-JFK.

What do you think ?

Sounds good, I should be able to make barring any disasters at work. (End of the tax year is a trying time for me!)

Just so as you all know, it has been suggested that we make this an official unofficial event (if that makes sense :?)

I'll do an announcement and news block, this can remain the discussion thread, and I'll mod the existing event page (if you're OK with that Robert?)

Everyone OK with Monday for this, or would we prefer Tuesday?

Voting (current result)

Well I just took my little old Dak up for a test flight round KSEA and I had forgotten how much fun she is. (even if she does max out at 180kn)

Just to let you know, the DC3 appears in my IVAO MTL as a Lisunov LI2. (Very similar Russian copy of the DC3)

I'm really looking forward to monday now. :)

Well,

this will be first time ever I will not use radio navigation :) I even will not load FSNav. The flightplans were made to pass next/over to existed cities/rivers/airports, even in the default scenery. So I am going to take the written plane, take my watch and try to make every turn in time...and then I will be probably reach the destination :)

The only thing I need to remember that at 120kias, every minute I fly 2 miles. But that is quite slow, so I will try 150kias instead, which means 2.5 miles every minute. ;D I am sure the watch will be the most important on these flights, and I will be very tired at the end, because of watching the gauges all the way ;D

IMPORTANT !!!

If you want to fly the 1st leg with us on monday evening, do not forget to position yourself in KJFK before the start, if you fly today a ProPilot flight !!! If you were in Travelling Mode already, then do not bother about it ;)

Well, for me a catalogue of failures...

FSP "flame-out"ed one of the engines about half way through, as a result of which I got very low fuel flow once I restarted the engine and from that point in had great trouble maintaining either height or speed.

Then I noticed just before SEG VOR that the flight logger had crashed, meaning I'll have to refly (offline this time, reckon my old laptop is getting flaky in it's old age)...

Finally, on ground and maneuvered to blocks through the magic of slew, as everyone is leaving (just before PhilN left, I heard his "right guys") my network went blatto and I was unceremoneously booted out of IVAN, TS and FS!

Thanks for that J. Yes, right up to the minute FSP shot one engine out from under me, I was really enjoying the flight. All of us in VFR formation, surely a sight to behold?

BTW posting my screenies in the forum now!

Great event. Despite fantastic support I also had a problem with ProPilot. At the end of my flight when I logged it, it was as if pro pilot hadn't even been running. Frustrating 'cos I too will need to refly this one to get it working properly. Never mind - great flight and a great evening.

VERY DISAPPOINTED!
Because ProPilot somehow didn't follow my perfect flight last night I had to fly again this morning to move the plane. So, in the spirit of adventure I tried out the autopilot on the DC3 trying to get it to hold a heading. The plane pulled sharply up, threw itself into about a 50 degree right turn and racked me up 720 propilot points in about five seconds! So ... bang goes my perfect propilot score and all because I dared to try out the DC3 autopilot. Next flight in this event ... no autopilot experiments :)

'Ere ('ow queer...)!

Just been hard at work on sommat for my employer, and in that marvelous way that sometimes happens when you're thinking about something else, I think I've worked out why you all have been having such a hard time with the DC-3 AP.

Do y'all get your pitch trim right *prior* to engaging the AP?

Since I really enjoy flying props (single and multi-engine) when not flying the 738, and I have my control setup optimised for them (props, that is. I've got two control config files so I can switch between props and the 738 in a few seconds), I have rocker switches devoted to pitch and rudder trim, and invariably I tweek the trim during climb out without really thinking about it.

When time comes to engage the AP it doesn't have to do very much to remain in the climb I've been hand flying up to that point -  remember, FS AP uses pitch trim to maintain V/S. Sure, the nose dips as the AP catches up, but not by very much, a dozen feet usually.

Well, the DC-3 have a very strange AP unit. The heading hold unit have 2 knobs and 2 scales. It seems the lower one is the reference heading, and you should adjust the upper one ! Before takeoff, or engaging AP, adjust both scales to the true heading, and then, when AP is turned ON, adjust your heading with only the upper scale/knob ! The below scale will slowly follow your heading and within 1-2 minutes the 2 scales will show again the same vector.

Something similar for vertical navigation, although I could not really understand the meaning of the lower knob. Also does anybody know what the "GO TO CAGE" button used on the VSI gauge ???

Interesting Rob. I'm goin to have an interesting couple of months by the sounds of this trying to get to grips with the DC3. A great plane but a bugger to fly when you're used to the comfort of modern jets or even the modern VFA aircraft we have.
