Hi Guys,

I'm just trying to get an idea of who has made the leap of faith over to FSX.

I re-installed it tonight and now that there is a lot more information available from places like FS Insider etc, I have managed to get it running at an acceptable rate. (and I got it to work after M$ released the fix to stop the error when re-installing!)

So, if you fancy taking part, click a box above that best describes you.

Do you think is interesting a poll about the use of keyboard or joystick in FS?
I use a laptop and only keyboard to flight in FS. I'd like to know what other people do.

It's an interesting question - where will flightsim be in 12 months? It seems that FSX has really polarized opinions in the community (and no, lets not start that debate again here ;D) so I wonder how long it will take for FSX to 'overtake' FS9 as the sim used by the majority..?

Will it ever? ;)

What do the rest of you think - get voting and let us all know!

For myself, end of the year, maybe...

MS said Vista/DX10 would be the making of FSX. Vista "launched" this morning, and I'd like to see how that pans out just for a start.

Then there's the Intel/AMD quad-core battle in which neither side will really take the field until Q4 (Intel sorta has quad now but their kinda hedging their bets on it until the "better" AMD quad [Barcelona] starts to ship...)

And as for graphics, DX10 is almost certainly a quarter away at this point (despite nVidia's best efforts to have 8800 DX10 for the Vista launch, their having problems up the wazoo getting the driver stable...)

It's all a really nasty minefield at the minute (one wrong step and you'll be crippled for a while...) - 8-12 months from now everything will hopefully have "bedded in" a whole lot more than it is now...

Im afraid FSX is a flop unless there are many Newcomer who buy it in the warehouses.

The majority of hardcore simmers like us will proceed with their well equipped FS9. We spent a lot of money in it and FSX is not good enough so that a replacement with all investments makes sence - even if the hardware will be better in the future.

Maybe M$ introduces a new Version XI after a short period (absolute speculation!) ??

For me there are loads of things left that I have not yet experienced in FS9 (sceneries / planes etc.) and I am quite content with the simulator and its graphics - I simply have no time left to install FSX ;)

Well, yes it is interesting.... I think the Hardware issue is holding FSX back but Hardware gets updated and people will move on. As for the Addon issue, most major developers (LDS & PMDG included) are only dealing with FSX from now on which will force it forward. (Cast your minds back to FS2004 luanch, it was just the same!)

As I said in my post above, I already have FSX running stable at 15 FPS now and I can get 30+ FPS when not around a lot of dense scenery or traffic...... This is improving all the time. Many tips and tricks are available to get it working happily on our current hardware, admitedly, it's not blisteringly fast, but it good..... (My FS system currently is a P4-650@3.4ghz, 2gb DDR2 6400 Cas 4 RAM, Radeon X1800 XT 256mb GFX card and a Samsung Spinpoint SATA 2 250gb HDD)

As for the game itself, well I can only speak from experience. I love the mission gameplay idea, I like the new layouts and menus, I like the new scenery and views, I like the new WX engine, I love the wet runways! I HATE the online gameplay mode. (I will stick to flying offline or on VATSIM/IVAO for now)

I am fortunate, I can run it now and I can afford to upgrade my system slowly over the next few months. As Murray said, I think there will be no major developments on FSX until DX10 becomes mainstream and this will not be for the next 3-6 months. Don't forget, the boxed version of FSX that you buy is not DX10 compatible anyway, a patch will be made available in the future. I have run FSX on the RTM version of Vista and my setup with XP Pro was running about 0.5 FPS slower than Vista so there is a slight improvement by running on Vista.

The Quad core debate is a moot point.... APARENTLY!  FSX does not take advantage of multicore processes and although you will see a slight advantage by running all your other stuff like AntiVirus and other background tasks on one core and FS on another, FSX can not be split between cores or have traffic and AI running on one core whilst panel and dynamics are running on another..... at this time!!!!! No announcement has been made to say whether it will be patched in future for this so I doubt it will.

The debate will rumble on, I think in 6 months time, if we run this poll again, the outcome may be somewhat different, only time will tell though!

I'd like to ask a question about Vista

Will we have to re-install everything?

My config:

P4P800DeLuxe 3.0GHz, 1.00 GB RAM, 2HDDx280GB, GF6600GT 256MB.
FSX in the drawer. Frame rate too low.
Will certainly upgrade in 6 months or so.

Cheers,
Luciano

Possibly...

If M$ have done their usual, the full editions will be able to upgrade, but the upgrades won't do a system without a Windows OS installed, but anyway, chances are most people will want to do "virgin installations" to ensure best possible speed...

I have only treid a clean install Matt so I can't say for sure but if you have an XP key then you should be able to merely buy the upgrade version for Vista and do just that without re-installing everything.

I would however join Murray in advising on a clean install, it will run much better in the long run as it will not be importing your bloated XP registry.

Also - if you purchase a the Upgrade, be aware that once you upgrade from XP - Vista then your XP key will no longer be valid, thus causing XP to not operate.

This only happens with the "Upgrade Retail Versions"

I run both FS9 and FSX, Both on the highest settings witch results in a framerate of 25fps for FS9 (set max 25fps) and flipping from 18 to 5 fps for FSX. I use FSX just for fun at the moment and FS9 for flying EHM.

FSX is hideously slow on my computer and I won't be flying it much until my computer is upgraded early this year. Until then, I'm staying with trusty FS2004.

It seems like from the vote that FS2004 is leading the pack, along with FSX, the reason why I did not go for it was high machine requirements though the features are better!! or is it really better??

Well guys, I know this will still not apply to many people yet but I can tell you this announcement really bought a big grin to my face....

FSX Announcement

Support for my Dual Core CPU!!! Wooohooo.... If that a conservative estimate of a 20% increase in Frame Rates is correct it means I should happily see 30FPS with akk skiders maxed.... I will let you know how it goes when I get SP1 hopefully in a few weeks but I think this may mean a few more poeple might take the plunge and convert to FSX.

FS9.. :P

I've tried FSX, but it was lagging even with minium settings. I'm running FS9 with Ultra High graphics without any kind of lagging. And it's not really so much worse than FSX.

-FS9 fan ;)

Tarik,

There is a Service Pack coming out soon for FSX that should correct the performance problems somewhat... I hope this helps your lag! :)

Hello. I think fsX is really  nice and I'm running it on a 1.4Mz that I configured to the max of 1.6; not recomended but necessary; it's just hard to get airplanes to show their colors or details, much of the models; even thought some fs9 are good, very few do the real job, special the gauges that were made before fs9 won't show, I think. But the difference is remarkable and positive. I'm for fsX!

Ordered it meself just before I went on holidays (won a £15 Amazon voucher in a comp, so thought I might as well get it in advance of my new PC - c. Xmas) and am thoroughly looking forward to it (avec big Intel CPU, no doubt)

Bit slow on this but I need to change my vote ;D

I now own a copy of Deluxe, still sealed etc. just need to buy the hardware for to run it (xmas time as previously advised, although I did buy my new monitor for it yesterday... Samsung 266BW... Overclockers have it on "This Week Only" for £199.99+VAT so I wasn't going to hold off.)
