Zurich In Focus - Geneva
« on: February 04, 2008, 03:28:36 pm »
Welcome to another in this occasional series of articles inviting you to explore some of the less well known cities and airports in Switzerland! This time, it's the turn of Geneva, a beautiful and historic city in the south-western corner of our Alpine home...

Geneva is the second largest city in Switzerland by population and is home to countless International Organisations such as the United Nations & UNHCR (remember the UNHCR Event we had last year?), World Health Organisation, World Trade Organisation and the International Committee of the Red Cross amongst many others. It is also headquarters to many successful intenational banks and businesses, making it a very busy city ;)

The city lies alongside the very scenic Lake Geneva (or Lac Leman) with the Alps and Jura mountains surrounding it. The Geneva region borders France whose influence is felt in the use of the French language here as well as the culture and cuisine.

To serve this thriving city we have an important airport:- Geneva Cointrin which enjoys the longest runway in Switzerland at 12,795 feet. The airport lies along the border of France and Switzerland so travellers can enter the airport from France without going through Swiss customs first! The airport's website is full of useful information to help you learn about real world ops...

In Flightsim, you can enjoy detailed scenery of the airport from Daniel Gauthier (for FS2004 & FS2002; available at Avsim) or in FSX it is part of an expansion pack including most Swiss airports called "swiss_ai.zip" by Henk Altena which is available from Flightsim.com.

There are a number of EHM flights into/out of LSGG with destinations such as London City and Vienna as well as the local cities of Zurich and Bern. Charts to help you navigate safely are available here.

So if you aren't familiar with the approaches to Geneva, why not try a flight there today?
