I am looking into getting a new computer that will comfortably run FS9 in decent detail along with some addons and of course the EHM fleet. I really have no idea what I want to get or need to get so help is appreciated...

Thanks a Million,
Jonny

Will a monitor affect performance (will the framerate drop or anything like that due to thr fact that the monitor wasn't made for all this new stuff) or should I stay with my old one which is fine in terms of colour and clarity.

The monitor does not affect your framerate, only the lifetime of your eyes ;)

My PC was build by myself to save some money, and has that configurations:
- Black Midi Tower with 450 watt power supply - 75 euros
- CPU AMD Athlon XP 2600 - 140 euros;
- MB Asus A7N8X-X  Deluxe - 120 euros;
- 512 Mb DDR 400Mhz - 85 euros;
Graphic Card MSI FX5200 Pro - 110euros;
Maxtor 80 GB Disk - 75euros;
Philips Pro View 17´Monitor - 250euros;

All equals 855euros; but this is in Portugal. I don´t know how much in your place. With my PC i play FS2004 at full details and with a good average of FPS! For this, the graphic card is very important becouse sometimes the chip is not the most important, the label is really also importante. I´ve an FX5200 Pro from MSI that beats most of FX5600 from some label without good reputation in all benchmarks.
But if you wanna play in "full power" buy at least an Geforce FX 5900!!
To complement the FS experience i´ve one joystick from logitech, the "wingman" with force feedback 2! It costs +/- 80 euros; but gives a new meaning to FS!!
Good shopping!

For decent performances it would be best that you go with Simao's setup.....but if you want higher performances but not to the extreme (as in FS doesnt even utilise that much power) robert's setup looks to be good though the pricing is not known

Sounds very good. As for the videocard, a GF4-Ti4200 is somewhere there at GF-FX5600, so it is a good choice.

Well the Athlon XP 2400+ is a good CPU but it´s certainly an "Thoroughbred" that is an old version from Athlon XP with an cache of L2 of just 256. After this model AMD introduced the Barton, an more strong CPU, available from AMD Athlon XP 2500+ to 3000+ with L2 Cache of 512!
The difference of price is not really big, so if you can afford it, would be a better choice to buy an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton.
Abot the graphic card, Asus Geforce FX5600 has on general better performances...
If you use Hi-Speed Internet and make downloads, 40 GB of disk in nowdays very few.. try at leat one of 80GB!!
Hope i gave some help!

Or you could by 2- 40GB hard drives. This would even out all off your stuff. You could set it out like.

Harddrive 1-Windows Files and Program Files.

Hardrive 2- Downloads/ Files/Music Etc

you can simple buy one of 80Gb and make 2 partitions! :) it´s realy more cheaper!! Here in Portugal on disk of 80Gb costs +/- 70 euros... one of 40Gb +/- 55 euros... so 2 disks of 40Gb = 110 euros... 40 euros of saving! :p

Umm... Turista, wasn't the AMD Barton range created by an external company that modified the CPU for better performance....or did I dream it...often happens

:% Why is it important ??? :%

It was well said, the Barton core technology -known as the 0,13 micron technology- is a brand new at AMD, it has less heat discipation, more powerful than older ones...and the Barton range starts at 2500+ MHz.

Just an advice when you will buy your CPU be sure that is an AMD Athlon XP and not an AMD Sempron!!
A lot of stores are selling this new CPU has an Athlon XP telling that is equal!! False, for example an Sampron 2600+ has an frequency o 1,8Ghz and 256 of L2 Cache!! An Athlon Barton 2600+ has an frequency of 1.93 Ghz and 512L2 Cache and a really better performance!!
Samptron it´s the "new Duron" to compete with Intel Celerons!
Safe landings and shoppings :p

Sounds pretty good except that you should like what the others said get a larger harddrive and a Barton core processor as well as opt for the FX-5600 instead of the GeForce 4 Ti-4200. All that should only result in a small rise in cost ;)

Looks pretty good! :) But please enlighten me......why did you choose to get the sempron instead of the Athlon XP? Is it really a whole lot cheaper? And how much did the entire system cost?

It is surprisingly good. I have aircraft and airport detail turned up to ultra high and I only get minor FPS loss around EGLL...
