FSX
« on: August 24, 2011, 10:33:46 am »
Hi
I have been down this road before but would welcome some advice update. I currently use FS9, have lots of add-ons, and am happy with it as it works really smoothly on my system. However, my hard drive is faulty and requires to be replaced within the next few days meaning that I will need to re-install everything. From those perhaps familiar with both FS9 and FSX, my question is would you advise taking this opportunity to change to FSX or stay with FS9? I operate Windows 7(x64) and have a Dell XPS system with processor Intel(R) Core(TM)i7-2600CPU@3.40GHz 3.40GHz.

Thanks,
Ian

Your CPU specs look OK for running FSX. If you have a decent GFX card, and a nice stack of RAM, you could certainly go for FSX. But bear in mind that although bare FSX may look better than bare FS9, FS9 with a bunch of add-ons can look better (and even still run faster) than bare FSX. What I mean to say is that you will want to dress up FSX too with (payware?) addons. So there's some installation work to be done there too.

You might even consider X-Plane at this stage, maybe next to a bare FS9 for if you feel like falling back to the sim you are comfortable with. That is actually what I would do if I found myself in your position. But that's just my personal opinion ;)

I'd certainly stay with FS9 - if you have the addons you want and it works well for you, I don't see the point in moving to FSX ;)

Thanks for your help folks.  Following your comments,  I think I will stick with FS9. Computer due to have new hard disc fitted today so I will have loads of work to do, I imagine, getting everything set up again. Not looking forward to having to re-install everything in FS9 - I was only now at the stage of having everything as I wanted following my re-install with the purchase of my new PC earlier this year......and here we go again!!  Unfortunately won't manage to fly for a bit until I get all this done.

Will get back to flying as soon as I can.

No worries Ian, you take your time to get it all installed and tweaked properly. We all know how frustrating it can be when the settings aren't right ;)
