Title: US Airmail Pioneers Event 2009
Post by: EHM-1465 Dominic on July 04, 2009, 01:43:41 am
The next ProPilot Event starts on 23rd July as you can see on the Events page here (http://www.fly-euroharmony.com/site/events/usairmail2009/ongoing.htm).

To register for this exciting set of flights, please post your name, pilot ID and your choice of aircraft here or send an e-mail to dominic (at) fly-euroharmony.com. The choices are DC-3 and JU-52 to cater for FS2004 and FSX pilots ;)

You can also use this thread to post any questions or issues ahead of the Event...

Good luck pilots !

Leg list PDF: A really quick 'n' dirty leg list I made for the previous Airmail Pioneer event, updated for the new event. Courses and distances listed are GPS direct and as such make no allowance for windage. Murray

Mod: Changed the subject to more accurately cover what the thread is being used for now ;D Murray

Andrei Vatasescu EHM-2097 with the default FS9 DC-3.

I tested both this one and the Ju52, it was a tough decision (I would prefer FSX for VFR) but I think I am safer this way :)

Great gents, I'll add you all to the list of registered pilots and aircraft tail numbers will be allocated shortly before the Event ;)

@ Bruce - have you followed the instructions in the DC-3 installer? Assuming you're using the default DC-3 rather than the MAAM-SIM one, you have to take these steps:

"- - - I M P O R T A N T - - -
This package contains only texture. You must have the default aircraft installed in its original folder (...FS2004\aircraft\Douglas_DC3) for proper useage. After the installation you need to add the EuroHarmony texture to the Aircraft.cfg file, so you should add the following lines to it:

[fltsim.4]
title=Douglas DC-3 EHM
sim=Douglas_DC3
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=ehm
kb_checklists=Douglas_DC3_check
kb_reference=Douglas_DC3_ref
atc_id=PH-EBD
ui_manufacturer=EuroHarmony
ui_type=Museum
ui_variation=Douglas DC-3
description="The Douglas DC-3 revolutionized air transportation and airline service during the 1930s and 1940s. It was a luxury airliner that boasted cabin heat and running water in its on-board lavatory. With the right balance of efficiency, range, speed, and payload, the DC-3 was the first aircraft to earn a profit for its owners just by carrying passengers. The hero of early airlines, a handful of DC-3s are still at work today."

If, for any reason you already have a [flightsim.4] section in the file -maybe you installed already some more DC3 textures- then change "4" to the highest one in the file +1. This is necessary to show up the plane in the game."

If this doesn't fix it, let us know and indicate exactly how you installed it, where your FS folder is and any adaptations you already have to your default DC-3 please ;)

@ Bruce - have you followed the instructions in the DC-3 installer? Assuming you're using the default DC-3 rather than the MAAM-SIM one, you have to take these steps:

And if the texture set for the FS2004 default is anything like the MAAM set, you'll need to copy the content of the default texture to the EHM texture folder (but DO NOT over write the existing files).

Hi everybody,

I am kivanc, this is my 1st article at the forum, and obviously I am new.

I would like to ask about the procedure of joining to this kinds of events. Are these event take place online  or could be offline?

The announced schedule must be followed at the exact dates or could be accomplished in an interval?

What are the detailed cases of failures?

I could not reach sceneries -since 'avsim' reports a reconstructrion of library-, in that case are there any way of reaching these files.

By the way I am from Turkey, Çanakkale (Dardanel). I am 33. Working as a physicist at COMU (University). I am happy to be at EuroHarmony.

Thanks

@ Manuel - you're now on the list ;)

@ E-J - sorry about the timing for you, just that time of year I guess! Hope you can fly some legs later anyway

@ Bruce - within the folder for the DC-3 you need to have an extra texture folder called texture.ehm with the downloaded textures in it - I think this will be inside the file you call "Douglas DC-3" in your description - and as long as you have added the lines I mentioned above to the aircraft.cfg file, the plane will show up with our Museum livery on it.

@ Kris - welcome to the party ;)

@ Kivanc - welcome to the Forum and airline :)

The rules for PP Events are that they must be flown online (that is, connected to the Flight Logger which is connected to the Internet, it does not mean you have to fly IVAO or VATSIM) and you must fly each leg of the Event during the days listed. We are hoping the Avsim library will be back online by the start of the Event as they are very busy rebuilding it after a hacker attack. As for any failures that may occur, you should manage them as best you can and report them in the Thread that will run throughout the Event so that we can review any crashes or problems and decide whether any spare aircraft can be allocated - this will ONLY happen if a crash happens that is completely outside of the pilot' ability to recover ;)

Ah well, that's life eh? The days I thought the entire world revolved around just me are long gone ... :) :)
I remember the Croissière Noire Event so well because I enjoyed it so much. So, I was really looking forward to this next event you guys kept hinting about. It's just too bad I don't get to start it off with you guys. Once back from my holidays, I'll drop a line to see if there is a way for me to cut in half-way, or start later and catch up or so. Or get another workaround to fly this tour PP (I only fly PP for EHM)

Well, see y'all around!
E-J
I'm not in it for a badge or so, so that's of no concern. I just like to fly, and even better: as a shared experience :)

Or to put it a slightly different way:

If the plane is lost and it's definitely not your fault, you may be given a spare plane. :-\
If the plane is lost and it's your fault, you most definitely won't get a spare plane. :(

So, and given how forgiving both the planes available for this event are, if you take your time and are careful and sensible, you'll complete the event with the plane you were assigned at the start.

The big trick with all trail-draggers Bruce is extra-fine throttle control and differential braking. Get it moving with both throttles, then you can high-speed corner by engine power (wide-circles) and low-speed corner with differential brakes (tight-circles). The only other thing to point out (which many forget) is that the center of rotation is under the main wheels (the wings) on a tail dragger, not the nose, like all your modern airliners.

Just for any of you who are undecided about which aircraft to choose, if you've had a look at the DC-3 video I posted in this thread (http://www.fly-euroharmony.com/forum/index.php/topic,5538.0.html) then have a look at this Tribute (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBWGhDCu5x8) to the JU-52 for some balance ;)

Both great planes for this Event anyway :}

Hi Dominic,

From your message: 'EDIT:- All of the pilots who have signed up now have their own aircraft assigned and locked to them at KJFK '

I had applied to sign in to the event with JU-52 (FS2004). After your message I had check the lock flights that are assinged to me but could not find the aircrafts. Since this is my first event I don't know the procedure well , thus what should I do now? If my aircraft is assinged how I can reach it, or (well) etc...?

Thanks

Kivanc,

When I look at just the Airmail 2009 JU-52's at KJFK, I can see your reserved aircraft:-

;D

Do remember, the PP fleet reviewer only shows 30 results at a time, so you may need to be more specific to see it.

Hi Kivanc,

Please note also that the aircraft are, for now, "assigned" but we won't be able to lock the flights until the very day the event starts.

So:

- You cannot see yet the flight with the "Propilot" button on the Flight Logger

- Every pilot will need to lock each flight (aka leg) at a proper time, that is within the time frame scheduled for that leg.

- To lock such a flight (in the web site as usual), the better is to select aircraft by type, which shows (roughly) all participants to the event who use the same plane.

- Now is the difference, as the assigned aircraft are coloured in green (for one's self aircraft) or orange (for other pilot aircraft). While hovering with the mouse over the list one can see whose aircraft it is.

- After you lock the flight, it appears coloured in light blue like any PP locked flight. From that moment on you can do the flight.

IMPORTANT NOTE: you may need to update the timetable in FL3 in order to see the actual event legs. It is recommended that all event participants do this in order to benefit from any last minute change.

Hope this helps

Andrei

Having just had a look myself in advance, I can confirm that, having run an update in the Flight Logger:-

So this means that once the first leg is active - 2009-07-23 you can log onto the ProPilot section of the website and lock the first leg, then go into the Flight Logger, select the aircraft, select the flight, click the ProPilot button, fly the flight, success!

... then go into the Flight Logger, select the aircraft, select the flight, click the ProPilot button

Sorry to disagree - and in public - with my boss, but that's slightly inexact: clicking the ProPilot button selects the locked flight so there's no need to select aircraft nor flight beforehand.

I agree with the "fly the flight, success!" part though :)

Your bird awaits you at KJFK Franz!

Not sure about your texture problem, but the installer is somehow special as it does not update the aircraft.cfg file, it only contains instructions for you to do so (these are displayed during installation, next to the disclaimers, and yes, you can run the installer just to read these and then close it).

Some basic checkpoints:
- Your EHM aircraft should appear in the standard Douglas DC-3 aircraft.cfg file as a distinct [flightsim] section. Check the manufacturer and type entries to make sure it's really the EHM one!

- That section should point to the right texture (entry says "texture=ehm")

- You must have the EHM textures at the right location, namely a "EHM" subfolder in the Douglas DC-3 folder

Hope this helps

Andrei

Hi all,

Just to remind you this is the big day and flight locking for the first leg has started.

I strongly suggest you lock your flights early, so that should any problem arise, we have time to solve it without slowing down the event.

Another thing, if you prefer (like me) doing really VFR flights instead of "GPS direct", make sure you check this site (http://www.skyvector.com), which provides online maps well usable with FS.

And don't forget to pick up a few letters with you, we have to back up the "Airmail" title somehow :D

See you in Frisco!

Hi guys,

just back from my holidays, I would like to try to catch up with you guys (alongside the official tour, of cause, 'cause PP would give a problem locking the flights). As a dedicated FSXer, I was trying to get the Junkers fired up, but I a m having a bit of trouble there. Perhaps one of you can help?
The problem I am having with Tante Ju is that she won't start. I have fuel on board, and I try to follow the checklist, but after the starter engine revs the main engine to about 200 rpm, and the vacuum ("Saug") hits a reading of 4, all of it stops again. I get the same result even when I hit CTRL-E. I tried with different mixture and throttle positions on my Saitek yoke/throttle thinghy, but all with the same (lack of) result.

If I change to another type plane, start engines with CTRL-E, and change back again, she'd be running OK. She's a handfull to fly then, but that's a different topic ;)

I must be overlooking something here... Main switch, check; magneto's, check; mixture, check; throttle, check; fuel qty, check; crankthe engine a couple of times, check; hold ignition switch 'till engine starts... ?? I can only click it once, and it the reverts to the off position with the above results.

Anybody got any bright ideas?

I've answered this for the MAAM DC-3 in [ this thread (http://www.fly-euroharmony.com/forum/index.php/topic,5516.msg42582.html#msg42582) ] and the same fix (you need to tweak the value a little) works for the Tante Ju. ;D

EDIT: Better yet, Dorin asked this very question in [ this thread (http://www.fly-euroharmony.com/forum/index.php/topic,5570.msg42644.html#msg42644) ], and provides an answer for the Ju.

I'm not 100% sure about these statistics I'm about to reveal, as the current PP event engine doesn't make tracking events all that easy, but...

As we're over half way in legs, here's a quick "half-time" round-up:

Of the twelve original participants (7 in the DC-3, 5 in the JU-52) there have only been 3 fallers; EHM-2493 Kevin in the JU-52, who it seems never made it out of New York (plane still at KJFK); EHM-2380 Martin in the DC-3, who at least made it to Bellafonte (KUNV); and EHM-2097 Andrei in the DC3 who got as far as Chicago (KMDW) afore a holiday put paid to his participation.

As for the rest of us, I think we're all still going (you need to be at Cheyenne by now, planning the flight to Rawlins) and I personally look forward to getting past the Rockies, the DC-3 doesn't enjoy flying at altitude :)

Any chance of a screenshot Robert? I'm not seeing anything like that in default FSX.

Oh that is "Ultimate Terrain USA" package that provides both, the matrix and I-80 visually. I checked it on Google Earth and giant grass circls are visible in that region. I guess those are the reason... Also do you remember the movie "Cast away" with Tom Hanks ? There were more scenes too with road crosses in the middle of nowhere, and another one soon further, and so on and so on. I can see it from the sky too, but I will post a shot here soon ;) The incredible is you can see it for hundreds of miles across the middle of USA.

That's totally mad, whether it's really like that or not. As I say, default FSX has looked really rural, but no cross-hatch roads...

Having just finished the US Airmail  Pioneers Event, l would just like to thank MT team and all that made the event such a good one, quite enjoyed the whole thing, never flew in th USA before, so was something new, also the Dakota made a change, being limited to my flying hours in one session; it was nice to get fired up in a short time and not take for ever as with modern Jets, most of the event was done online with on line weather, a bit of fun going over the rockies in the Dakota, the plane is very forgiving, also found the ATC chaps more helpfull than in EU. look forward to more events with the old plane's, thanks again for the event. Hi,
I had finished the long trip from Atlantic to Pacific cost of America. I would like to thank to the Management Team and the accompanying pilots. The organization was great. It was a perfect experience to fly over USA and observe the cross continent route. Most of the time weather was fair; only about 10th AGS, around Des Moines the incoming high pressure was stressing the flight. The previously prepared flight routes was very help full. Flying with Junkers was a pleasure; sometimes I'd thought that to much is missing when flying with jets at high altitudes.

I would like to communicate more with the other pilots during the trip; maybe 'twitter' kind of medium would be great to pass instantanous messages... etc.; by this way we would have a better opportunity of knowing each other more than the names and the countries and sharing altitudes about the trip.

Establighing an event album would also be great.
'I am happy, I succeeded.'
Thanks EuroHarmony.

Litle tip:

If you fly online with IVAO, you just type in ".chat [callsign]" (no quotes or brackets) in IvAp, and you get a chat window with that callsign. "+ [callsign] will add further pilots to the chatlist :)

Dunno about Vatsim, never been there, hehe...
