Title: 12-year anniversary fly-in
Post by: EHM-2387 Eric-Jan on April 15, 2013, 08:56:51 pm
This thread is created so pilots can discuss which route/plane combo they will be flying, at what time, and on what network, during the 12-year anniversary fly-in to Arequipa, Peru.
See this thread for the announcement:

I will start from La Paz, flying a single engine piston (C172 or alike), to beef up the altitude challenge  ;D ;D
the 200nm will take me 2 hours, so I'll be starting early: close to 1900Z, just to be sure. VFR, of course, at no more than 10.000ft if possible to navigate between the mountains at that altitude ...
Maybe I'll do some sight-seeing around Lago Titicaca too :)

Being on a working day (and living at GMT+3), I will start a little early, for an arrival time slightly before 2100Z.

Not sure yet about the aircraft and departure, but option 2 seems the most tempting at this time. (This mostly depends on what I can get airbone - and land - in X-Plane which I had to reinstall).

Not having a working computer at present, nor an internet connection (just moved house to a new build, just waiting for BT to admit we exist and I can get Sky on the case...) I'll be with you in spirit. If I find my X-Plane disks in time, I might fly offline in a SEP, but lots of planets need to align for that to happen...

I'll be in spirit with you too, because next Sunday 21 I'll go to Peru (-7 GTM) but not to Arequipa and I'll return Sunday 06 May. Have a good one and Happy Anniversary EHM fellows :)

Slightly off-topic but actually it all happened while I was testing with X-Plane for this event :)

I always use, especially during VFR flights, to switch between the cockpit "normal" view (for flying) and external view (for visual navigation and sightseeing). While doing so woth XP-9, "something" suddenly happened to the view system because since that moment, terrain in cockpit view was turned with 45 degrees (so when I looked "forward", I was actually seeing the terrain on my right).

I could not find any command to reset the view, and was of course unable to land the plane this way - test aborted. Now am I missing anything? Was there any way to restore things to their normal behaviour?

Actually his is the worst part about X-Plane: despite some obvious advantages, whenever I try to use it I feel like an absolute beginner, and aware that many things can happen that will prevent me for completing a flight.

Some extra details if anyone can help: the "something" happened when I switched from "circle" view to "forward" view. After the view actually changed, I could see the terrain "scroll" in front of me. Afterwards, I tried several other views, but every time I came back to "forward", it was still broken.

Also, not sure whether this matters, but I was flying the B1900D.

Thanks for any help.

I will try and be there. Planning to fly a Beech BE58. My route will be to first fly down Lake Titicaca to  to JUL vor and then through the Andes to SPQU. If can't make it online, will fly offline.

@Andrei: yes, X-Plane can be daunting like that...
even worse: switch to XP10, and you'll go through the learning curve again, because key assignments are different all over again.
From the heart: in XO9, W puts you in forward view in the cockpit. Q, and E turn your "head"left and right respectively in 45 degree increments. S moves down a step until step 2. Step 3 down ("S"), will get you back looking upright again. A is for outside view, so your workflow would require a lot of switching between W and A, for switching in and out the cockpit, Q and E for looking left/right, and an occasional S-S-S, to scan all instruments and switches.

P.S. I found out the hard way that key assignments are different between XP9 and XP10 when I flew XP9 for a change during the Tropical Trader's Event (to actually use that scenery I made ;)). When I tried to take a screenshot, I ejected (out of a DC-3 ::)) and had to start over...

The anniversary flights are in the timetable as of now, and are "assignable".

Log in to the site, go to your Dispatch page, select Timetable, search for destination SPQU, and you'll see the three flights.
The shortest one (from La Paz) is for class 1 to 3 airplanes, the middle one for class 4 through 6 airplanes, and the longest one for class 7 airplanes.
Click on the flight you'd like to do, mark the bullet at the end of that flight to select it, choose an aircraft of your choice from the drop-down box, and press "assign"

You could actually assign all three flights, if you want to do an all day event ;)

Just so everyone knows: if you haven't already, you can install (and use ;)) the EHM Voice Client to talk to other Pilot's that are connected. You don't even have to be flying to use our Mumble Company Channel.
See
http://www.fly-euroharmony.com/forum/index.php/topic,7244.0.html (http://www.fly-euroharmony.com/forum/index.php/topic,7244.0.html)
For details on how to install.

Having said that, my current internet connection, or better: lack thereof, prevents me from flying online this evening. Will do the flight offline, but that means I don't get to meet up with you guys :(

Sorry guys but I have to give up. After practicing the whole evening, I am still unable to fly anything under this X-Plane installation. Something (or some other thing) strange and unusual keeps happening. Is it the platform, the add-on aircraft or myself? I cannot tell, but I don't want to celebrate the 12th anniversary by a miserable crash.
