Title: Cruise ship?
Post by: EHM-1199 Philip on February 24, 2005, 10:13:18 pm
Online and south of LGSY - ie. just south of island home to LGSY - on the first flight of the greece tour I spotted a cruise ship in the sea. Is this standard MS scenery or one of my addons? Anyway, always good to see something you don't expect so here's the image.

Probably standard but maybe it is an addon? MS can be pretty realistic about these things. The ferries in Seattle especially move and go out the various San Juan islands.

Yes, they are default in FS9. I`ve spotted a few myself. Especially in harbors, but even out seas.
But compared to FS2002....I haven`t seen/found any carrier to land on.  Does any of u pilots know if there are any at all in FS9?  Maybe that feature was taken off....wich seems very odd, and if so...very sad:[

There  is another one at Hawaii, in the Ford Island. But you can install add-on sceneries, which will place about 10 Nimitz class carriers at various locations around the big Mom Earth. ;D

one of the challenges on an old version of FS was to land a cessna on a carier!!!  this was great fun, you could land ok...but parking was a no go!!!

I tried that carrier with the lear45 and even got it down there, if you go touch down at stall speed, but it took me very much tries, but really great fun!

Yep, it was FSFW95.

I had mastered getting the Cessna down, full flap, 60 knots, hold down the brakes before touch down so they come into effect straight away. I had also done the second in this challenge, to get a lear35A down. I used the weird technique of spoilers out, full flap, gear out, parking brakes on, speed about 105 (it will fly like this, nose high). I would set this up on approach, then it was just jam in the reversers straight away, and it was possible to stop right at the end of the parking bit, not on the runway though. Cos the tailhook systems and catapault release systems were not modelled.

It was possible to take off a cessna on the runway section, start right at the end, full flap, brakes on, full power, release brakes, you'll get about 40knots by the end. You'll lose most of the 20feet or so of alt that you have off the deck, then level out, then you gradually clean up and build up speed til you can climb. I once managed 5 consecutive circuits of the carrier, with full stop landings and non assisted takeoffs before crashing.

Brings back memories, eh...

yeah that stuff was great...you don't really get that cool type of chalege on FS2002...dunno bout 2004 though.

Microsoft should bring them back i feel...they were great.

Yeah yeah!! Scenarios was great... Have you ever fly a challange that you make an ILS landing when you are flying blind. Everthing was set to zero. ;) Everywhere is white and you are not avle to see anything. You are with your instrument panel. :) And you have to land because you are run out of fuel... :) I always crashed the plane... :)

Reference the carrier stuff there is a paid product ... I think the company might be called 'Just Flight'. The product is something like 'carrier operations' and apparantly does simulate hook etc.

There are freeware carriers for FS2004 !

When I started FS, it was called FS4.0 for DOS, even this old prog contained at least 2 carriers already ! 1 at the San Francisco Bay, 1 at Long Beach, and there was a 3rd one somewhere else...they were landable. I have downloaded later a very nice (16 colors!!! all vector drawings, nothing textures!!!) F18 Canadian Air Force airplane, which was my favourite jet that time :)
