hi guys - hope you dont mind me asking this question but what actually is ILS and how does it work? if someone has the time would they mind explaining it to me in simple terms lol :s
-
Brian,
If you look in the FS2004 flying lessons it is all explained there in detail ;)
But the short version is that two radio beams are 'fired' out from the runway which instruments in your plane pick up - one gives guidance if your plane is to the left or right of the correct course to land on the runway and the other tells you if you are above or below the correct descent path to land on the runway.
The HSI (or Horizontal Situation Indicator) on your instrument panel shows by pointers if you need to fly to the right or left or up or down and if you keep these pointers centred in the instrument you will approach the runway correctly. When you can see the runway you then land manually or if your plane is VERY expensive it might land automatically for you ;D
Basically it helps you find the runway in poor visibility.
Like I say it's properly explained with diagrams in the FS2004 flying lessons...

thats great Dom thanks mate - i'll have a look at the tutorials so..... but one more question do you only use ILS when there is poor visibilty or can you use it all the time?

You use it when the runway has Ice on it, that's why its called Ice Landing Situation.
;) Honest.

For further Clarification - the Horizontal Situator is locked by the "Localiser" - this controls the latteral guidence for the aircraft once you have become established upon it.
The "Glide Slope" is the vertical guidence and will descend your plane correctly to the runway.
Im sure if you were to pop on Teamspeak or request a training session, Murray and I would be happy to help.
I will be back tonight around 10 local, so ill be on then ;)
-
did you get my message regarding teamspeak conrad? ( U2U ) - 10 tonight would be great if i can get onto teamspeak
-
Yes - just replied and i will be on at 10pm Local.
