Title: Bird Strike - Thomson 263-Hotel
Post by: EHM-1703 Philip on May 05, 2007, 12:01:07 am
Hi Guys,

Saw this posted on another forum and thought it was a cool look at how emergencies are handled in the real worlds.

Mayday 263-Hotel Video (http://youtube.com/watch?v=9KhZwsYtNDE)

The way those guys kept their cool was amazing, they were certainly earning their corn that day!

Feel sorry for the pax who didn't make it to their Holiday destination that day!

Feel even worse for the bird that didn't make it across 6 Left at EGCC!

:)

Great video Phil :8

It certainly confirms that those engine fail at V1 simchecks the guys & girls do every 6 months pay dividends!

I feel bad that this happened to a 757! (Why not that hideous monstrosity the A330?!)

Seriously, I am amazed at how well the pilots maintained their cool in getting the plane on the ground. This movie played on the New Zealand News a few days ago and I was very impressed ;);D

Wow, it made the news in NZ, yet I live less than 40km from where it happened and only heard about it today! LOL I guess the Elections here have pretty much drowned out our news coverage! :P

British ... Soooooooo cool!!

So cool they'd turn ice jealous... ;D

Amazing !!!  Though I thought that engines could withstand a birdstrike.. I thought those turbo engines were made to take in numberous birds (frozen chicken) in preliminary tests as I have seen in numerous engine test videos....

It was reported on local news that day that it was 2  heron's  that caused this engine failure although only one is seen on the video.

Rico, they will ingest the bird and the casing will survive, unfortunately the turbines would never stand a chance against anything bigger than a pigeon!

The tests you have seen are the mandatory tests that all engines undergo to ensure that no parts of the engine are ejected laterally and thus through the wings (where the fuel tanks are) or through the fuselage. (where the people are!) These tests are not designed to ensure the engines survivability of a catastrophic failure, they are done to ensure the survivability of the people on board the plane when an event like this occurs.
