This must be pretty popular....
Already at 109m and yet not worthy of a classification whatsoever.
I think the hint is for the plane to do many loops above the chimney so as to gain speed and possibly a little height.
Any tips welcome
-
i havent got over 5 metres yet??? is there a trick to this? :o
-
i only got 70+ metres, how do you guys get to 100? :]
-
As said by others earlier there are a total 4 main factors:
1. Launch speed: Dictated by how quickly you drag the plane to the 'release line'
2. Launch Angle: Try to have a mildly downward angle to counteract the plane's natural tendency to gain height upon launch
3. Ceiling Fan: This fan acts the opposite way to a normal fan, in that it pulls the plane up rather than push it down
4. Chimney: The chimeny outside produces thermals (naturally) and can help the plane perform a couple of loops and gain height and lateral speed
Any other tips most welcome
Phil: You have spawned the devil. Next thing you know we'll be publish a paper plane's 'Flying Manual'. :]:]:]

Hi Patrick,
I got some of my colleagues stuck on this one too! Quite funny seeing them get really absorbed.
Anyhow, the most common way to do this is to use on of the image depository sites such as photobucket or imageshack etc.
One registered you get a handy page for uploading your pictures. Once the piccies upload, then each of them has a link in several codes to easily copy and paste (links for BBCode, HTML etc.)
That's the easiet way I can think of. Unless some of our brains find a way to make a direct link to yahoo's pictures...
-
Patrick,
Specifically, put [ img] and [ /img] (without the extra spaces) around the URL to embed the image rather than a url.

On the plus side, you can assume your own account (hopefully) and be back as Murray once more.

I'm not getting anywhere. My best is 10nm. How do you get it out the window?
-
your not strong enough matt...
-
update: just tried it again, luckily got it out of the window and got it to 50nm. I think I'm starting to pick it up
-
50 Nautical Miles!!!!
Impressive. ;D

Well,
after exhaustive tests and a bit of a tweak, it looks like the best that you can get is 114.734.
So far 5 friends got exactly the same...
The tweak is to take the plane to very left edge, take the cursor out of the flash animation, and then, bring it around the flash to point at the exact point of release for maximum speed.
Let me know how it goes....
-
Haven't beaten 108.891M yet myself, and the "trick" is to *NOT* loop-the-loop at all (let alone twice, great way to ruin an otherwise good throw...) Sotiris, your launching technique definitely helps with the longer throws. Just to help the rest of us, are you leaving the plane at the very top of the screen, or slightly down a bit, or what? And in terms of the "launch", where do you bring the mouse pointer back in.
Personally, I've been putting the plane about halfway between the dado rail and the ceiling, and I launch with the pointer a little above the skirting (otherwise it hits the floor if you're lower on the launch point)
-
OK,
you're right Murray.
My previous tips were not so helpful although that was my knowledge at the time.
The way it's achieved now is as follows:
Place the plane very top and very far left. Almost to the point where it disappears from view.
Release point: above the skirting board is:
a) A couple of thin lines just above it
b) A rather thick darker strip
c) A thinner dark strip
Release at the top of the second thick dark strip.
It should work.
Btw, they have launched a variant with the same underlying fundamentals (even the background noise is the same) but the distances achieved are much higher. So far at 146 meters.
