I was always curious about departure times in the timetable. Are those desired local takeoff times, or taxiing times?

I believe they are take-off and
landing Zulu Times.

I'm curious about when you need to start your engines if you want to take-off on time. For instance, my first flight yesterday, yipee, from EHAM to EHBK I started the engines of the Dornier 10 minutes before I was supposed to take-off, but I could take of nearly 10 minutes after the listed take-off time. Is there some sort of "rule" here, or do you have to find out for yourself?

as manu have said those times are take off and landing times in zulu, and pilots should try their best to stick to it (i think)

OK, if it is takeoff time then the situation is more difficult. On big airports the taxiing takes 10-15 minutes, and you can never know how much plane will waiting for takeoff at the end of the active runway.
I used to ENTER the game 15 minutes before the given time. It is enough for preparation and the "life starts" also on the airport, planes start moving. At the given time, I shut the doors and start the engines. Now it seems I have to start engines 5-20 minutes before the listed time according to the airport size...
I thought the times are given from the passangers side: they have to know when boarding is finished and when the plane leaves the gate.

I thought so too at first, but when I saw the time between take-off and landing, it was way too short to include taxiing and all those other (very important ;)) pre-flight things.

besides if it was for the passengers, it would have said departure time........perhaps replacing the takeoff time with departure time and landing time with arrival time would be more suitable
(Just went to check out the timetable, in the row that says take off, landing etc, the c in the class is not in caps........just a small note :P)

The EHM Timetable Creator (a tool by Gergely Kosa to create the new ehm timetable last year) was originally written to define startup and shutdown times. So in the timetable, s/u and s/d times appear.

You are right Lim about the column titles. It should mean takeoff and landing times. That why I was curius about it, cause I almost never could finish the flights within the given landing time. If the times define the block time and not flight time, it is hard to compete...

so um.......lets change the titles to startup and shut down? :P

My understanding was that these were times that we should try to set in the simulator but unless specific details about altitude, speed, pax and fuel load are set by management the second of the two times (be it landing, arrival or shut down time) will always be a vague approximation. I am finding that with speeds around the 200KIAS mark the time allowed for the Class 1 flights is very generous. My passengers have been delighted to arrive ahead of time having flown EHM.

That is of course. Even in real life there are bound to be delays or arrivals ahead of time. But great to hear that the passengers are happy! :P
