Did I really say Tom Cruise?? :]
Now I am really enjoying this debate but I haven't understood yet what the managment is going to do...
Does the name chart idea works? Which is the biggest problem between the built of the chart and the chosen the names? Tell me this please because I don't know.....
MC HAMMER IS 4EVER
I thought Magellano is a great idea, maybe Marco Polo can go somewhere else ;D

Wow, this is tricky. However, I have another idea for you all:

Why not name the planes based on manufacturer?

Most of the fleet appears to be European-made, like Fokker, Saab, Dornier, Tupolev, Airbus, BAe etc... and there are a few American aircraft like Boeing, Douglas, Bell (unsure about the other ones). So, why not name the aircraft by famous Americans/Europeans depending on their manufacturer? Maybe, if this change was implimented, the new names could come out with the new paint scheme for the aircraft?

Maybe the poll is the only solution ;)

What about Yuri Gagarin ??

Colonel Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin, the first man in space, while the first space walk was by Alexei Leonov on the Voskhod Spacecraft.  they both also deserve to be mentioned on one of our aircrafts

Well Ben your idea would be great if we where only european and american pilot here. But we can't just make it about famous people from USA and Europe, because we have pilot from other parts of the world then those two. So we still need to think world, and I don't think that going to be an easy job. Even if we just used famous europeans that wouldn't be easy. Philip came up with Sir Francis Drake, but then had second thoughts because that might offend some. Same thing would be the case if someone where to bring up the name of Lord Horatio Nelson. As a Dane I wouldn't be that happy to fly in a plane named after him. So we need to agree on someone that are famous not just in the whole world. No matter if they are from USA, europe, asia or another part of the world.

You're absolutely right Karsten; we need to take a global approach to the situation but that's near impossible! So here's another idea that we might like to consider.

We all vote on a single 'category' (scientist, discoverer, musician, artist, what have you) and from that category choice we create a contingent of international icons in that field.

What do you think about that?

Another Idea: 30 aircraft divided amongst 6 (won't count Antarctica LOL)continents = 5 aircraft each. Essentially there will be 5 people from each of the 6 continents represented. Maybe this would be more fair.

Just offering ideas!

I think that it is impossible to choose only 5 people internationally known of each continent we can do a poll with 20 votes for pilot and everyone can put in the poll 5 names, the top 30 names will be chosen, even if I think that we have 30 "747" to name and what about other airplanes??
I counted the main division aircrafts and they are 180......who can give 180 names??? I am going to leave the poll idea and I am starting thinking that all the pilots that want can choose 7 or 8 international people and they become directly names on the chart....

Well Paolo, even if we could come up 180 names, I would think it's a waste of time. As far as I understand it, the only name the aircraft is going have is the one that Robert put on it during the painting.

It is a so nice conversation, I do not remember a topic in the EHM history that got so much attention and ideas from pilots. ;D

Well, the name list is half way complete, but new ideas are always welcome. I think we will not brake anybodys feelings if we add famous historical names of people who only add something to the mankind, instead of destroy anything. Perhaps I should add my own name too ... ;D

Although, nobody mentioned General Patton! Our MD-17 is called Patton now. I gave this name, because the airplane is American, and a military development, also very strong and powerful. It seems non of the German pilots disagreed or were complaining about the name. But to avoid it too in the future, we will not add names that came from the history of wars ;)

Robert I agree, I think we haven't had a topic where people have had so many ideas. Reminds me a little about the old days, when MT wanted to change the fleet. Changes in the fleet back then could really make  some people get bend out of shape. But I don't miss those days. We have a much more friendly community today. Sorry for this trip down the old memory highway.

Would that be as someone that added something or someone that destroyed things?:%

So the managment final decision is to create the board or what? I haven't understood it yet...
I am very happy to have started this topic and I think that EHM pilots have many ideas, managment has only to help them to shout it to each EHM pilot... :>

P.S. Are we gonna create 180 names????

Thx Karsten, I modified the text...sorry for missunderstanding.

Well, the topic was started to discuss if we can have more names visible on 1 airplane model, not to help giving ideas to the name list. The answer to the original question was NO.

We surely do not need 180 names. Maybe not need any, but as the topic turned into a name collection, maybe we can use some really good ideas on the newly painted airplanes ;)
