GPS approach and landing how to do?
« on: July 18, 2006, 06:19:34 pm »
Hello All
Iam pretty experianced with ILS approaches and landings and also visual approaches(improving but still quite hard to judge sometimes)but on my USA tour flight (stage 6)i was approaching the rather unfortunatly named KRAP and was offered visual and also GPS appraoch so i thought i would have a fiddle about with the GPS to see if i could work it out.I didnt really sort it out so declared missed went round and did a visual instead. Can somebody explain how i do a GPS approach and landing start to finish so i can try it myself next time.
cheers Andy
PS It would be nice if you could get a book on flightsim navigation etc as i hate staring at a comnputer screen instructions perhaps there is one and you could let me know

You need the chart. It works pretty much the same as a VOR or other non-precision approach. Get your US charts from airnav.com or myairplane.com

In real life, there's not much written about GPS approaches. GPS is  not recognized as being an official navigation aid. This is because there's still a "fool" in Washington that can disable GPS simply by pressing one button.

A new GPS satellite network is being deployed right now which should be indepent. This brings some interesting possibilities for the future. It will be possible to make the flight completely automatic (from gate to gate). YOU still want to become pilot (read: babysitter)?
