World Tour 056?
« on: November 06, 2006, 06:51:19 pm »
Hi all,

A few weeks ago I was flying the world tour leg W056 from SAWH to YSRN (Strahan Tas), and had a very difficult time in landing a 747 on a 4,000ft runway (to add to the difficulty, I had little fuel left to proceed to an alternate... not like I could anyway since that wouldn't be completing the leg!). Not to mention, the runway has trees right in front of it, which naturally called for a high approach which isn't practical as, on a 4,000ft runway, I needed every inch I could get. Well, I hit the runway hard and instantly the thrust reversers were in action and the braking was applied at a safe speed. I was able to stop at the very end of the runway. I just want to know, what is the purpose for having such a small and slightly dangerous destination airport after a 10 hour flight? And, if a pilot crashed, they would not be able to report the flight and I think that's unfair if they had stayed at the computer for 10 hours monitoring it every step of the way. I will be very grateful if someone could explain this to me.

Thanks!

sounds a bit unfair to me Ben especially after a 10 hour flight!! but does this perhaps add to the challenge of the world tour itself?? is this a destination airport which a 747 lands on a regular basis in real life? if not then it would definitely be deemed unfair! :o

As far as I know this isn't an international airport LOL. Most flights in Tasmania go to Hobart, on the other side of the island. I think this is one of those small, civilian airports.

Hi,

Unfortunately I cannot help you, Ben. It was made long time before I was here ...

So, there isn't a good explanation for it, although your thought makes sense. At least we could have a landing on a more decent airport, and then a small flight to that airport :8 .

Some for us to take note, but at least, when we have a new World Tour, we cannot do anything about it.

Regards and sorry for it!

It most certainly is... now the problem remains how to take off ;D But at least I'll be in a smaller aircraft with little fuel ;)

Ah, Ben can handle any situation! You won't believe how mucked up our fly-ins can get, but he somehow gets out of it! (not to mention *cough* Javier*cough*)

hehehe...Leave it in!! Nothing better than a challange.
The best approaches are the tricky ones...not just a standard ILS, they're no fun at all...
Just had a go myself at this airport in the PMDG 744 and i can see where your coming from but its a really nice approach.
As long as you've got less than 30% fuel it should be good...

If you cant land it the WT isnt for you...as its there for experienced pilots. Not many come more experienced than Mr Contreras.
