Some medicine against CTDs
« on: January 05, 2007, 02:12:57 pm »
Hello All
I have recently developed the simmers nightmare ie CTD without any error message just poooof!gone.I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling didn't work,i have tried uninstalling and removing all folders option reinstalled didn't work i have tried clean boot and reinstall worked for two flights but last night FS9 just shut down again.I don't no why but i am sure somebody said something about the Addon Scenery folder causing problems.Anyway i have replaced my Addon Scenery folder with a shiny new one and will try that.
PS I don't like to say this but its only started occurring since i installed some of the new fleet, but that is probably just coincidence.
PPS the Event viewer is precisely no help at all it returns an error 1000 or 1001 which when you check with Msoft says hoorah no solution.
PPPPPPS Should i try a complete reinstall plus manual delete of all FS9 Folders and start from scratch.
cheers Andy

Andrew, perhaps a little more detail as to the timing of the CTD would be helpful. Does the crash occur when loading FS? loading and aircraft? etc.

Hello there
The crash sometimes occurs when setting up the flight, but also can occur during the flight as well.
This afternoon i have done two things i ve deleted my addon scenery folder and created a fresh one and also renamed a dll called olliac.dll (spelling?)as recommended by MS.I loaded up the flight i was doing last night (saved with Pete dowsons autosave)just before the crash and waited for it to stop again but this time it just carried on to destination(LGAV) so hopefully i might be solving the problem.I am still open to suggestions though.I am going to try going back to manual pirep filing just in case Flogger maybe causing problems. The trouble with these things  its just so hard to find out what is causing the problem when your FS installation has become very large. One other thing i managed to get FSManager running again with a little program from Avsim and cleared out unused gauges and checked for scenery problems etc so heres hoping.I will keep you informed .
cheers Andy

CTDs as you say a nightmare :$

Here some standard reactions:

- did you install a new scenery the last time? Deactivate it or them and see what will happen

- enable "Empty cache" in the scenery library

- empty your temp directory / Internet cache

- Use the tool Filemon - it monitors your system in real time and can identify the reason of a crash - you can define a filter expression with CTRL-L (= "fs9.exe") and start the tool. Just start FS until the CTD occurs and filemon will tell you which file was loaded at that moment.

Sometimes files are broken (incorrect check sum) by installation and cause CTDs - if yes, you can copy them seperately from the installation CDs without the need of reinstalling the whole FS.

Good luck

Miko
Thanks for your help.I will check out your programs.
I did a short flight last night (GMMC LPPT)and happy to say no problems this time.Perhaps removing my old Addon Scenery Folder and starting afresh has helped. The folder was full of stuff and i didn't no what a lot of it was so although i will have Afcads etc to replace thats a small price to pay for a smooth running sim.
Again thanks for taking the time to help.
cheers Andy

Hello Miko
I am quite hopeful that the problem is sorted out now.I have just completed quite a long flight (LPPT EDDF)and with a go round as well took the best part of four hours and with no problems at all .And this along with a flight last night of three hundred miles also with no crashes i hope means an end to the problem.

Hello All
I should just like to add that i thought the new fleet downloads may have been the cause of my CTD problems(you grab at anything when the dreaded CTD strikes)this is most definitely NOT the case.
