A new tour in preparation
« on: May 13, 2012, 11:24:59 am »
Hi all,

We are about to release a new tour; preparations are on "short finals" now, so it's still a surprise for a (short) while.

Instead of bluntly announcing the location and details, I will allow myself to "leak" some clues to see who can guess what this is all about - and where.

Clue #1 is:
Quote
The second time, you do it twice.

Indeed, the plot is not obvious... yet. If anyone had guessed the tour by my first clue, I would have checked my house for bugs already.

So here is clue #2:
Quote
2581

@Eric-Jan: as a general rule, one doesn't need to, but YOU may WANT to :)

Has it got to do with South-African insects, perhaps?

I can boldly state the tour has nothing with South-African insects!

However I cannot that easily dismiss David's suggestion, it's a strange coincidence indeed... or is it?

Maybe is something that I really like to fly and I missed twice: the US Airmail Pioneers Event, cause I'm an "old newbie"... nevertheless, as you wrote Andrei, Second clue: 2581 or 2586, could be NM and if it is, this is the distance between KJFK-KSFO. So I guess US Airmail Pioneers third version, but in a tour. Actually, I've a little question, just arrived @ KSFO, is possible to fly one of the lovely DC-3 (PP-A41; PP-A43; PP-A48; PP-A50; PP-A52 Douglas DC-3 Operational @ KSFO) in PP flight ???. Thanks for your help. :)

Hmm, if memory serves, the DC-3 (my favourite plane in the fleet, it really must be said, and X-P just got a stunning looking DC-3) is in the museum fleet, so not available for PP (or is it... Alex/Dom, care to comment?). Dear Daddy Dom, please can we run the Airmail Pioneers event one more time, please? ;D

All Museum planes can be flown as if they were Main Fleet planes of the equivalent 'rank' so you can fly a DC-3 on any Class 1 route, including PP flights ;)

And if enough people would like to fly the Airmail Pioneers Event again then of course we can do that in due course... But let's get back to the new Tour :)

Sorry to disrupt your otherwise very interesting chat about DC3s and the Airmail Event (which I also missed twice, sadly), but this is not what the new tour is about. And I prove it with clue #3:

Quote
Athens (yes, THAT one) and Faranah (hmm.. where is that ?) share a common particularity regarding this tour

@David: ~2581 nm between KJFK and KFSO, now THAT is a coincidence.

Me of course, I'm ready and really like to fly for the first time the US Airmail Pioneers Event with my DC-3 (MAAM) ;)

Faranah... Guinee... It could be a dessert storm tour ???  or another Crosière noire ???

Hehehe, you are all over the place, aren't you, David ? :)

We'll park the Airmail thinghy for now, and incorporate it in our future plans (it's got my vote, too, because I had to stop after leg 2 already), so we'll get back to that in due time.

For now, it's got nothing to do with the suspense Andrei is hinting at. And no, it's not another 007 tour ;)

Faranah, Guinea is correct... but packing only summer clothes for this tour is not.

150, are you sure?
shouldn't that be 160, as that is 2 times 80?

I couldn't agree more on the fact that 2 x 75 = 150, unfortunately this doesn't get us any closer to the tour business. Maybe clue #5 will:

Quote
Really big.

To give a "sub-clue" as well, I really expect clue #5 to ring a bell for all those who did it the first time.

Anyway, this is the final clue, and your last chance for a guess (be it an educated or a wild one), this week-end the tour will open and everything will become clear.

Now if you could wait just a bit to hear the whole story...

The whole story already published by now, check the announcement here

Now if anyone wonders about the clues:

#1 "The second time, you do it twice" - Should be pretty obvious by now, for anyone who reads the tour announcement and details

#2 "2581" - This was indeed a reference to our colleague Dirk Uys, as he had recently completed the original world tour and expressed his feelings about it in the forum. This tour has been in preparation for a long time but releasing it now means a special message for Dirk: "no, it's not over, you have to start it all over again!" :)

#3 "Athens and Faranah" - That was a bit tricky. Athens is the starting and ending point of the tour. Faranah is where the two laps around the world cross, which means these are the (only) two places to be visited twice.

#4 "150" - I expected this to ring a bell for all who are familiar with the world tour

#5 "Really big."  - This should have rang an even louder bell. Note the final dot within the quote. The full quote is "The world is big. Really big." and it is the beginning of the tour description for the first Euroharmony world tour (a long time ago, before I joined for sure)

 ;)
And "all over the place" was also meant as a hint.
Of course " twice around the word" in two times 80 legs was also meant to point you in the right direction
;)

So nice, those little games ; D

Hi David,

The choice of aircraft for the Double World Tour is yours - fly what you like as long as it is suitable for the trip distance and the runway length at each end!!!

Thanks Dominic, but the only problem is that the DC-3 doesn't appear in the aircraft list ???
