Help with VATSIM
« on: April 05, 2004, 09:05:10 pm »
OK, so I know I found this tricky the first time and have been away awhile.
I got my number and new password e-mailed to me.
Downloaded squawkbox and AVC.
Opened FS2002
Opened SBHost
Followed the EHM manual in setting up a multiplayer game and then opening squawkbox.
Changed my callsign.
Filed a flight plan.
Tried to connect with the IP address of the UK server taken from ServInfo.
And then ......
It keeps telling me my callsign or password is wrong.
Help ... what am I doing wrong?

I think sometimes not all servers are working. You don't have to pick the one geographically nearest to you, just try all of the ones that are for vatsim and one of them should be working. I think that might be the problem you are talking about anyway, I'm not exacly an expert or anything when it comes to online flying.

Choose always the nearest server,

If you what to see wich server is nearest or fastest,   you can use servinfo,  you can see the response time of the servers,  both for IVAO and VATSIM.
You can also lookup here the IP adres of the servers.

You must first connect , and then submit your flightplan.
If your on the gate put sq-box in standby.
Keep also the callasign in Fs2002 the same as in SQ-box.

Willem, thanks for this advice also. I have tried connecting to different servers but have had the same problem. I'll change the details you suggest and try again Will.

Phil,

Can't be specific about VATSIM, not having flown on there for six months, but I'm a regular on IVAO (controller and pilot) so I should have transferable skills.

Can you be a little more precise about not being able to connect?  What OS are you using? What other software are you running with SB/AVC/FS(8?)?

And a suggestion to keep you ticking over... create your multiplayer session before you hit the Fly! button, and connect FS to it then.

Murray,

Software is Squawkbox, and AVC although I haven't even got as far as opening AVC yet.

Also, I'm wondering if it is my squakwbox installation as SBHost isn't available in my modules of FS2002 but only through my programs menu on my PC.
It is running on FS2002 and Windows XP Home.

OK, things move on apace... :)

Do you mean HostSB.dll (i.e. the window inside of FS for SB)? That is a separate download (used to be on the downloads page...) that you'll need to install manually into the FS Modules folder.

Did you try having ServInfo build you an ipaddr.txt file for SB?  Start SI, get it onto VATSIM and let it do an update or two, then hit the IP button (save the file into your SB folder)

Finally, do you have *any* proxying or firewalling software running (including XP's in-built firewall) as SB can get really confused by firewall software... Try disabling it for a single test run if you have...

HostSB I open as a program from the menu of Squawkbox programs installed.
I'm not sure how to install it manually into the FS Modules folder. Is it as simple as copying the file across?
I didn't have ServInfo build me an ipaddr.txt file so I'll try that. XPs firewall isn't running but I do have an antivirus software running so that could be causing similar problems. I'll try with it disabled. Thanks for all the advice and I'll let you know how I get on.

Use for FS2k2,  Sq-box use version  2.3.5,

Use also  HOSTSB 1.02 this one works within FS2k2 it’s a DLL wich must be in de Modules
Directory.

Use also in FS2k2    FSUIPC 2.975 must also be placed in modules directory.

Higher Version  need registering: (if you have FS9 You need version 3.03).
FSUIPC KEY : Name = ServInfo / Key = HEXV 7QNT FQ0F

Below the procedure for FS2k2:

First start FS2k2,  HOST a game , minimize fs2k2.
From the start menu run SB-host  (you can also use Hostsb from within fs2k2)
You see a empty screen.
From start menu run Squawkbox-Main program.

Click the first option- TCP/IP,
Then click the start search button,
click OK,
Select the session name you created in FS2K2, and click the Join button.
After splash screen sq-box click OK.
SQ-box window opens.
Connect and return to FS2k2.

Be aware of proxying or firewalling software as stated by Murray Crane.
