I don't think we've had this discussion since about this time last year when I shopped for a new PC. I'm still happpy with the PC but wondered what graphics card folks think is the best bang for buck at the moment. I don't mean which is the best ever super duper 500£ mega card. More - if spending £150 - what should I buy?
This usually promotes a good discussion as the ATI and NVidia fans argue it out :)

Well, I always move around the 150 EUR range, where you can find a lot of good cards. I think that is the minimum price for a gfx-killer game, like FS :)

It is always a good question, if you want to meet the 2 fanclubs, to disagree about the 2 brands :) but I think for gaming, there is not a big difference between NVidia and ATI chips. If the card had 128 MB RAM, then simply select the most expensive one from the list, until the price you are able to pay...then you surely have a very good card, and more freetime to think of more important things about the life ;)

I bought used gigabyte ATI radeon 9700 pro since 1 year for 150 € and I am very satisfied with it,very powerfull card. I don't have money to spent on super duper new graphic card - I always calculate in middle range:-))For now, this graphic card suite all my needs regarding fs2004 and watching movies.

i particularly don't like the ATI stuff...i'm an NVidia man myself, and quite like the FX5900, although you can get a much better (and more expencive) card!!

i'm gonna get myself and FX5900 as a present when i pass my driving test!!
and then the world of flight simulation would feel a WHOLE lot more realistic!!

Chris, good to see I'm not the only person that just plain doesn't like ATI's PC graphics cards (don't get me wrong, love my GameCube and that has ATI Inside, I have just never gotten on with their AGP cards...)

So, just to make some of you jealeous, I'm a week or so away from ordering a GeForce 6800 GT (AGP) to replace my [borrowed from my housemate] FX5700...

I use Matrox 8 MB Onboard graphics cards which is integrated to my main board. :'( I am planning to have a laptop. Any suggestions about 1000-1500$. Because if I can not have a good laptop I can buy a good home computer and that money is enough for a relly good one. I am travelling to Bodrum where my parents live and I need that laptop if I can afford. :) As you see my friends everything depends on money in this world... :(

I just think that your a fool buying a PC from PC world!!!

but that is just a personal opinion (although it could be worse, you could be getting it from dell!!!)

what you should do is go to a local store that actually builds the PC's, this way you will get exactly what you want, and also recieve AFTER SALES HELP!!! (btw PC world will just say that because you have installed progs. they can't do anything, and if they can do something it will be to just wipe and re-install, and they won't keep your docs!!!)

you see i work in one of the local shops and also build PC's myself outside of work.  This is definatly the way to go!!!

Ah, another follower of teh '1337 n1nja path ;D

Built my own FS server machine with my own fair hands, and know every single component in it. There's nothing like the feeling of satisfaction you get after doing it all yourself and it boots for the first time (in my most recent case with much crossing of fingers and keeping a wad of kitchen roll to hand just in case the new Koolance watercooling gear leaked like the blocks I was replacing had...)

ye the thing was i fot 40% off the computer from pc world, originally ma m8 was gonna build me one. But I couldnt have got what i am getting now for the price i am paying.

yeah but if there is any probs then he might have been able to help, or another PC shop may have.  With a PC world PC they won't help you, if they do then their prices are RIDICULOUS and also PC shops won't touch it with a barge pole cos of the warrenty, so if it goes wrong then you could be in trouble!!

I feel that all these big chains are the same though. My brother has a dell, we had problems which were not hardware, but they were major windows wouldnt start up due to something to do with drivers for the moniter anyway, we asked for help and they said that it will cost because they only fix hardware which is oviously very rare. This resulted in us haing to reinstall windows

EHM 1506 - I holidayed in Turgutreis last year and it was quite possibly the most superb hoiday destination ever. Enjoy Bodrum - I know I would. Referendce your laptop question - if you can travel with it go for the desktop - far more bang for buck.

yeah will agree there, and also when the new stuff comes out (BIG graphics cards, big memory) then it is really easy to upgrade!!!


Also if the laptop gets any BIG issues then you could get a pretty BIG bill for the repair. (as parts for laptops are really expencive.

It's amazing what you can do if you home build. I have a little experience even though I'm only 13. You can pick up real cheap second hand/nearly new parts off ebay and similar for a few bob (although I prefer to have new parts).

Overall, it's so much cheaper - go here learn how!

I know how to home build...built all 3 of my machines...and work in a PC repair shop on sats!!!

but hey you didn't know that...and now you do!!!
