Gambia river in sight

Gambia, river, c.700 mi (1,130 km) long, rising on the Fouta Djallon, N Guinea, W Africa, and flowing generally northwest through SE Senegal then west, bisecting The Gambia, to the Atlantic Ocean at Banjul. It is navigable for the entire length of The Gambia; oceangoing vessels can reach Georgetown, c.175 mi (280 km) upstream. The river is the chief transport artery of The Gambia and provides access to interior sections of Senegal and Guinea. In 1978, Senegal and The Gambia formed the Gambia River Development Organization (which was joined by Guinea in 1980) for the purpose of developing the river's natural resources.

Start seeing the Dakar peninsula, beginning of descent

Dakar , city (1988 pop. 672,991), capital of Senegal, W Senegal, on Cape Verde Peninsula, a port on the Atlantic Ocean. Situated in a market-gardening region, Dakar is Senegal's largest city and its administrative, communications, and economic center. Manufactures include refined sugar, peanut oil, fertilizers, cement, and textiles. Flour milling, oil refining, and fish canning are other important industries. The city is the busiest port in W Africa, serving Mali and Mauritania as well as Senegal, and has modern facilities for handling and storing goods. Dakar grew up around a French fort built in 1857. The first major pier was completed in 1866. Dakar's importance increased significantly after 1855, when a railroad linked it with the Senegal River.

Short final at Yoff

Dakar-Yoff-Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport is an international air facility in Dakar, Senegal and the main stopping point for flights from Europe to South America. Its IATA Airport Code is DKR. The unusually long named airport, the most significant airport in Senegal, can handle airplanes up to the size of the Boeing 747 jets. It used to be one of the five main hubs of the now defunct multi-national airline, Air Afrique. The airport was named after Léopold Sédar Senghor, a well-known poet who served as president of Senegal from 1960 to 1980.
