IVAO-GB VFR Tour 2006
« on: August 22, 2006, 09:01:17 pm »
Not strictly EuroHarmony (as I flew using a GA callsign) but as Razza/Conners "accompanied" me on TS2 on the first day of the tour, I thought you'd like to see some of the many screenies I grabbed. Unlike some participants (I grassed one up ;)) my intention on this tour was to fly totally VFR legal, using my 1:500,000 charts for navigation/airspace limits, and avoiding MATZ where possible, even if it meant taking a big "detour" to do it. As it turned out, there was only one occassion where I felt I had no choice but to penetrate MATZ - on the leg from EGNW-Wickenby to EGCL-Fenland, where avoiding MATZ would have quadrupled the flight distance.

Scenery info before I get to the pictures - I have the entire four volumes of the JustFlight UK VFR Scenery, the JustFlight UK VFR Terrain (vol. 1) and the whole of the UK2000 airports set (practically every field in England and Wales, whether civil, military or disused). I dread to think how much it's cost me, but I think it's worthwhile...

Departing from EGBB-Birmingham. Little did I know that it'd take me more than a week to return...

With the right terrain/scenery, Wales isn't half pointy.

Departing from Walney Island (North of Blackpool for those that don't know the UK that well)

For Razza mostly, who was giving me a "guided tour" of the Lake District while I was flying over it...

T' sunset owert Yorkshire, in't it...

And this was the reason it took me eight days to finish the tour, rather than five. On the way into EGBK-Sywell the absolutely huge thunderstorm you see in front of the C182 was sat over Birmingham. Of the close to thirty screenies I took trying to show the lightning, this was the only one with any (centre of the cloud "horizon")

And when I finally did get into the air in VFR conditions (three days later), the same storm front was still at work over the Midlands....

Very nice!

Seeing you were going up north from EGBB, did you have to use the VFR corridor near Manchester and Liverpool?

@Tim - nope, on the leg out from Hawarden to Blackpool I chose to go out over Rhyl (I actually went as far as Cardigan Bay for a look see) and then North over the bay... my only regret is that the oil/gas fields out that way don't feature in any of the scenery I have, as I could have used them for visual route verification.

@Javier - VFR is much easier, as long as the weather is good and you either have a good aviation map or a half way decent GPS (which in FS we have in practically all aircraft), plus there's a certain amount of freedom from ATC in VFR flight that you don't get with IFR.

I've seen them from the air in real life, rather nice.

When departing from Caernarfon, I hope you followed the Menai straight.:P
