Taxiing with the Beech 1900D
« on: October 01, 2006, 02:27:57 am »
I joined Euroharmony last week and already made a couple of flights. I decided to use the Beech 1900. As soon as I was cleared to taxi and started to get the airplane moving it accelerated extremely quick. After a little fiddling with the throttle I found out that at least in my case the airplane accelerates or slows down.
The only way I could keep the taxi-speed acceptable was by accelerating, slowing down, etc. Moving the other controls such as the mixture had no effect on this behaviour.
So now my question is: What am I doing wrong or is this just the way the Beech behaves?

Hi Kris, welcome aboard!

A couple of things.... Make sure you have the aircraft correctly loaded, with a zero load the Turbo Props tend to be very twitchy! Next when taxiing using a Turbo Prop, your Propellers should always be feathered to a near minimum setting to reduce the forward momentum (thrust) the props generate. You can do this from the throttle panel if I remember rightly. (Its been a long time since I flew the beech!) From what I have read on the SAAB forums, Taxiing is a very difficult task in the Turbo prop aircraft as it requires constant throttle adjustments to each engine individually.

Hope this helps.

I do that too, just speeding it up and slowing it down. I try and keep the throttle in a position where it's speeding up only slightly, and then I'll slow it down and then have to speed it up again. Although it's a pain in the neck, we kinda have to live with it, I suppose! ;D

Its an art form and no you are not doing anything wrong.I dont no if you use a joystick but if you do then a joystick with a twist grip(not sure what you call it but REALLY helps with the taxiing) is a must for FS
cheers Andy

Well that depends if you are going for a yoke of a stick, the Ch Yoke is good i feel, as I'm unsing it myself. But on the joystuck side i think the Saitech X-45 is rather good Ask Jonathan about that:P
But where you can get it in Dublin I don't have a clue....

You Could always look no Ebay for a second hand Microsoft Sidewinder. They are hard to come by new these days, but they are not a bad budget stick. The Saitek X52 is the latest all singing and dancing Stick and Throttle combo www.overclockers.co.uk has them quite well priced not sure if they will send to Dublin but I would have thought so. As Christian says though, if you want the best, Get a CH Yoke or a CH Fighterstick! Have a look at http://www.chproducts.com

Thanks, for clearing it all up. After some extensive training ;), I got the hang of the accelerating/decelerating. I also found out that the other Class 1 airplane, the Sukhoi has far better taxi-habits, but I find the Beech a lot nicer to fly.
For the joystick-part, I use a MS Sidewinder, with the mentioned twisty-feauture, I can't hardly imagine how I would taxi  without it.

yeah just had a look at the CH it looks pretty cool - i have seen an MS Sidewinder in PC World recently so might go for that as it would be quicker than buying of the net!
