Are there any Concorde Flights
« on: April 13, 2007, 02:39:39 pm »
Hi,
This may be a too far-fetched question, but does EHM have any Concorde flights as of now. I am right now only at Class 3 but look forward to flying at Mach 2 on a Concorde soon, was just thinking if it could be logged to my name in some time ;D

I think the Concorde is retired. They've still got the old Flightplans on the Concorde page if you want to fly some Concorde routes, but just for fun. The Concorde is out of service, and I'm afraid you can't log flights with it any more:(

Oh ok, understandably, one of the best plane is today resting its heels... it did have such a flawless operation of 25 years and one crash ruined its whole effort. The cockpit of the Concorde would surely be something to watch at ... man all the dials would make one go crazy!!!

Vincent,

It was not the crash of Air France 4590 that ruined the career of Concorde, it contributed, but Concorde was set to survive that tragic accident on both sides of the Channel.

It was in fact 9-11 that sealed its fate. Many of the regular passengers that flew Concorde with both BA & AF almost daily were killed when the twin towers collapsed and the majority of its PAX were affluent Americans many of whom stopped flying after 9-11. You only have to look at the state of the US airline industry to see what an affect this event had. Many of the major US airlines are or have been in Chapter 11 bankrupcy protection the others have had to make major changes to their operations and have had to swallow major losses. Even operators like KLM, DLH, Af and BA have suffered greatly at the hands of a minority of small minded individuals who call themselves Al-Quaida. Not only did we senselesy lose so many lives on that day, we lost two of the worlds greatest feats of engineering both from the 1970's... The World Trade Center and Concorde.

really? I had no idea! I always had the impression that the cost to fly it was getting higher, and eventually, the Concorde was having more money spent then it was earning, so they had to close it. Thanks Phil for the information!

Matt, there was a good documentary programme here in the UK called "Concorde a love affair" it was very informative and covered this fact. I think it was a BBC Timewatch series, you may be able to download it from them or somewhere else.... ;)

Yes Matt, it was BBC but I think it aired a couple of years ago, I think it was part of the celebrations marking her retirement.
