Hi all,

just found this wonderful mini-site of the UK's government on calculating your carbon emissions and footprint.
Act on CO2

For the record mine was 8.94 tonnes per year.

However, it failed to account for the 40+ flights I have to make each year on business. And out of the 8.94 some 6 tonnes were directly attributable to just 3 return short hauls I take in private per year.
This must be biased somehow. After all, Boeing and Airbus boast about fuel economy and most of the flights I'm on, tend to be 99% full.

Finally, what's better? Flying Zurich to Hong Kong in a fuel-efficient plane together with another 312 people or riding a donkey there. My feeling is that in the 6 years it would take to complete the journey, man and donkey will have exhaled equivalent amounts of CO2.

LOL,

Well I am disgusted with myself.... My Carbon footprint is higher than the national average, (11.1) although I did it as a household not as an individual. I am terrible for leaving all of my computers and electrical equipment on standby when not in use, I really must get in to the habit of switching them off at the socket! Also I still have some way to go on the car front! My car is very efficient, a diesel powered car that is one of the most frugal in the world (Peugeot 307) powered by the PSA 1.6 liter HDI engine which is a class leader it is just a shame it is such a terrible car and quite unreliable! We also have a second car (Volvo S40 2 liter) that I use for personal use and the wife uses for getting around town, this is where our problem occurs, it is a diesel also but due to the larger engine it is much less efficient especially as it only runs around the town! So some food for thought, maybe I play my part and try and reduce our Co2 output!

Nice find mate!

Phil,

stick to domestic/private calculations only. I'd hate to think how 150'000 business air miles would fare..... :@

OK Phil,

I did as you said and guess what...
A whopping 30.55 tonnes of which 28.57 down to the flights alone!!!

Oooops

P.S. (That means that without the transport bit, my consumption less than 2 tonnes!!!)

I couldn't resist choosing all the 'wrong' answers on purpose and managed to score a whopping 4452 tonnes of CO2 annually. Doing it properly, I get 6.4 tonnes.
