Real world weather... fog.
« on: September 17, 2007, 04:14:46 am »
Ok so, I used to chose real world weather (static) so i get a realistic cloudscape, and winds and what not.
But I've noticed that lately, for a LOT of locations i want to fly in, real world weather returns FOG , visibility 5 or 10 miles. Every time. It has like a 4000 ceiling anyway but i want to see the scenary on the ground too.

So I wonder, could it be that its a coincidence and its fogged in Paris right now?
Easy way to find out is chose my nearest airport, SAEZ in this case, and see if the conditions match. Nooo... clear night herel, all stars are out, but in the sim: FOOOOOGGGG.

Im beggining to wonder if the jeppensen server is out, or whatever, and FS is using a "default" weather. Cheating. :P

Do you guys get anything like this?

I've not noticed this myself as a pattern Mariano... However, the last flight I did that used real weather was foggy but I guessed that it was quite possible it was accurate - maybe not!

I'll try another flight and see what weather I get and let you know...

Ah, the infamous 9999/fog/METAR bug.

The problem is only present when all of these three conditions prevail:
a) You are in ICAO (not FAA) territory
b) There are clouds in the sky below 20,000 feet
c) The visibility is greater than 10km.

Outside the US, METAR visibility, when actual visibility is >10km, is written as 9999. This actually means >10km, but FS interprets it literally and sets the visibility to 10km (approximately the 5/10 miles that you see). In the US, it's written 10SM to mean >10SM and FS interprets this correctly, but M$ forgot to tell it how to interpret 9999.

The problem disappears with no clouds in the sky because they just skip the visibility data from the METAR report entirely and write CAVOK instead.

Long and complicated explanation, simple solution - if only life was always that way, eh? Install this patch and all will be well.

The weird thing is that I'm pretty sure it used to give me fairly realistic weather even in Europe...
I'll try thaat fix, thanks Iain.. Let you know if it worked

Update.

Didnt work, in fact made it worse. Instead of removing the fog, now Unlimited visibility yields fog too. Curse of the fog i call it. Will try the other patch for the 9.1 but im pretty sure i dont have that.
