TeamSpeak help please
« on: February 27, 2005, 02:42:10 pm »
Right, following my slightly disasterous attempt to join this months fly in I am trying to get things sorted. I purchased a spanking new headset with noise reducing microphone. I downloaded and installed Teamspeak2 Client and have opened it to take a look. I'm slightly bewildered though.

When I connect to IVaP and then open teamspeak, do I need to do anything else or does it all connect automatically?
If I need to do something else ... what?
Also, do I need to press a button to speak or can I just start nattering away? All help as ever gratefully appreciated.

Ummm, firstly, when you connect to IVAP it loads up automatically, so you do not need to open it. (I am not aware if this needs to be configured, as it always works like this for me). As for how to talk, there are two options, one is by designating a key to press when you talk and another is to set it in a way so that it only emits sound when it gets above a certain noise level. Choosing which one you use is up to you, both can be configured from the "settings" menu button on TS.

Hope this helps;)

I'm pretty sure that for IVAO you HAVE to use push-to-talk. If someone can confirm this.....

I'm not sure if it is an official rule but please use Push to talk! When I'm controlling as ATC I'm not waiting to hear any screaming children on the background;D Believe me it happens.

When you start IVAP it should start teamspeka on it's own if you check the voice box in Ivap. When you switch ATC channel it should also switch you to the right teamspeak channel. It may need some configuring. Go to settings, sound input/output settings. Here you can configure wich key to use for push to talk. It also has an important feature activate "local test mode". Like this you can hear yourself and check on volmes etc..

Hope this helps. I just visited a bar to watch the local soccer team (PSV) play and can not see things very clear anymore. If needed I wil explain more later. End of March we will have another fly-inn. Please try and join then and we will help you trough it. If you want I can lso help you on a normal weekday from EGLL. JUst let me know when and I will try to be online.

Thanks for your great help here Cyriel. I'll have aplay and see if I can get things working in the next few days. Real life has a tendency to get in the way of flying so although I try to get some sort of pattern I'm often only flying after 9pm when kids are in bed etc.
If I know I'll be online at a specific time I may well contact you though and see if it is convenient to conincide our online times.

Or the dolts on UNICOM who have VA on and leave the TS2 voice announcements turned on... ("Member left..." silence "Member joined..." over and over... At least there is a Mute function)

As Cyriel says there is no rule or regulation about PTT, but it is a courtesy to both pilots and controllers that everyone use it. The only TS2 rule is that your bandwidth settings (Options\Bandwidth) *MUST* both be set to 32Kb/s.

If you have registered FSUIPC (or the software for your joystick will do joystick to keyboard button mapping) you can map a joystick button to your PTT key.

Regards TS2 in general, I have trouble using IVAP to start TS2, so for me it's easier to start it manually before IVAP. And finally, word of warning - when you leave a controller to go to UNICOM, TS2 (for me, anyway) stays with the controller almost all the time... As always, YMMV.

Oh, and a bit of advice to everyone from someone that used TS2 for over a year with a Planetside clan before using it in FS: when using PTT, wait for a second or two after you push the button before you start speaking, and leave the button pressed for a second or two after you stop speaking. TS2 is a little "gung ho" with its transmissions and I often hear people cutting themselves off at the start and the end of their transmissions. I still have hopes of the TS2 team adding a PTT "squelch" at the start of broadcast so that people know to give it the second or two before speaking... (and a speech "token" to stop simultaneous broadcasts... and proper command side channels... Gah, I'm getting into complaints for the TS2 team, not EHM...)

I have looked through the rules regarding voice and couldn't see it mentioning PTT. The reason I mentioned it earlier was that I lost a mark in the new IvAp exam on a question asking you how to set up Teamspeak. Out of the 5 options, only two were sensiblie, Adjust the microphone to transmit clearly, or set it to PTT. I put the adjust poperly one and got it wrong.....so just so you know;)

When you push to talk does everybody else get that irritating beeping whilst you are talking? It seems quite off putting so if there is any way to switch it off it would be good.

They hid that well. They (IVAO HQ management) could do with pushing that into the main Rules & Regs. Now I know that I shall start being militant to the tools in UNICOM that have VA on.

;D Depends on how good your microphone is....

In all seriousness, you just need to change your PTT key to something else; one of the function keys, or one of the non-alphanumeric keys (CTRL, Insert, and so on) and you won't get the windows noises... (Or equally, you could change the error sound in Windows itself so that you don't hear the beep for "incorrect" typing...)

Me, I'm really hoping that TS3 has full DirectInput support so you can bind PTT directly to a controller button (without having to go via the intermediary keyboard interpretation step)...

Indeed, but the TS2 client doesn't see either of the thumb buttons on my Intellimouse Explorer as DI buttons, so I have to use the Keystroke function in the old Intellipoint software...

Is it really necessary to get a posh headset mic or can I get away with a standard desktop one?

I have just finished downloading and installing the software for IVAO. I really like Servinfo, it's a nice program and I have just sat monitoring the traffic for a while to get a feel for the network. There are approx 600 people online at the moment!

Thanks
