Airplanes\' name

During last long fly-in I noticed that my 767 had the name Hawking on his right side, less then 5m behind the cabin's glass. I know that Hawking is a famous physic and I noticed also that other airplanes have other names.
For example the 747 has the name Einstein, the 737 Bolyai, the A340 Beethoven, the A320 Chopin....and all the other EHM ( excluded divisions and FA) have different names. It is very nice and I would like to know if it is possible to change it on my FS....
Another question...
We say that we have 30 "747" in our fleet, why can't we give them different names?? I know it is a stupid thing respect to other big problems, but it is only a suggestion..

Great idea, but I think Robert will want to kill you slowly over a number of days for mentioning it out loud...

The names on all our fleet are "static"; they are a part of the paint scheme of the airplane and not "external". If we were to have all 30 744's with individual names, there would have to be 30 different paint schemes to download, or 30 in a single "package" (Microsoft, probably a bit late, but Paolo has a point here...)

I am a pilot of EHM so I can explain my suggestions that are a little interesting and can make the company develop ( I know that the aircraft's name is a bit stupid but it is always a suggestion...:>  ) because I think that 140 and more pilots can be a great help to produce new ideas and to see EHM growing. So everyone that has a stupid suggestion too with  some good ideas must tell it in the forum.... This is my opinion, because I think that this forum help a lot under this aspect too.

in the MT, we have decided to use modern names for our liverys now, like Madonna for instance.

However, each tail ID cant have its own name
imagine the size of a file with all the textures for 30 747's, each with a different name...

In lots of fleets, the flagship aircraft are the only ones with names, or only a select few!...

Sweet idea though, One I have personally enquired about!

But more to the point: I think there is a very real bond between pilots and their aircraft, especially if the aircraft were individually named.

But as already mentioned, the file size would be HUGE. Great idea though Paolo, don't be ashamed to post it on the forum!!

To avoid political discussions here in the EHM forums, I think it's better not to name aircraft after politicians.

And modern names? I think we'll have a collective suïcide here at EHM, because who really wants to fly an aircraft named Madonna? (or imagine: Britney Spears, Miss Piggy, Bert & Ernie, Brad Pitt etc. etc.)

back on track. The question is not stupid, but impossible with the most aircraft models. In the Microsoft models you can add your own tail-id that will appear on the plane tail. It is an XML code, or I do not know fo sure, but it is hardcoded into the visual model.

Since the add-on models do not contain this feature, we cannot use it. If they had, you could fly under any name you set. But why did not you ask: in ProPilot we have only 1 tail-ID for all the planes ? It is the same problem. It would be nice to present all the different names and tail-ids, but we cannot.

About the names, there surely will not be artist names you mentioned But if we are going crazy, I would like to see a "Hanzel & Gratel" 737 ...or a "DJ Bobo"

eheh I am very happy to see many answers.... I was imaging only a virtual document with the names, something like a board with 30 famous names to give to our 747, not 30 different textures files.... :]
I would call my 767 arnold schwarzenegger (when he wasn't a politician...)
my 777 Daft Punk
my 737 Nelson Mandela
my EMB-170 with the name of my best friend
my Concorde that I am not able to fly with the name of that b**** of my philosophy teacher :@

Nice idea but this should go to discussion in the forum and the final list developed from popular opinion. We are a European VA and consequently I would propose we stick to naming aircraft after people who have made significant contributions to Europe. (This could be a fascinating international debate as we jostel with our national heros.)
So, my list of English national heros for international debate as a starter is:
Sir Francis Drake (Bruno ... you may prefer to remember him as El Draco!)
Sir Winston Churchill
... oh and Frank Whittle, the inventor that made this hobby more fun by inventing the jet plane.
King Richard I (Lionheart) leader of the crusades ... always a popular guy in what is now part of Europe but then considered Asia.

Well Phil, I guess that may generate some healthy debate.

The only thing I would like to mention, we now have a Hub in the US so I guess we are no longer solely a European airline. We have a large contingent of active US pilots (about 13 at last count! then there are 4 Canadians, 3 Ausies, and the list goes on a bit! all told roughly 20% of our Active pilots!) one of whom is second most active member of our airline! I guess what I am trying to say, I personally think we should not discount world names like the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, Chuck Yeager etc.

Just my 10 Cents or 10 Pence, depending on your location!

Or people who have made a big difference like Frank Whittle (jet engine) or name them places, a 767 called the City of Sunderland!;D

Hehe, if it comes to football, I have to mention my famous star when I was a kid: Dino Zoff, an italianer goalkeeper. For me he was the best 20 years ago But Beckenbauer is a good choice too

Well, we were discussing on this topic, and found out this concept:
Main Division: as now - famous scientists (Newton, Einstein, Coanda, etc)
Helicopters: famous writers
EuroCargo: famous person in the world of transportation
EuroHolidays: famous artists
EuroBusiness: famous businessmen (Rockefeller, Pulitzer, etc.)

These are still plans only, but you can see we did not change too much the original concept, as this is part of our image. And as Phil said, we are not only European anymore, so we cannot think of Europe's biggests

RW, I don't think anyone would disagree with you on your list of National Heroes, I was just picking aviation legends. War Heroes and Military personnel would cause a similar problem to politicians, remember when it comes to the Military, one countries Hero is another countries Villian.

With Roberts post above in mind, I'll start with a list of names following those guidelines.
1. Main Division - Tim Berners-Lee (Inventor of the WWW)
2. Helicopters - William Shakespeare
3. Eurocargo - Ernst Heinkel (Designer of the first ever Jet Aeroplane)
4. Euroholidays - Has to be Picasso for me
5. Eurobusiness - Richard Branson! (Hahahahahaha, although a competitor, he is a phenominal business man and I don't suppose he is a Virgin!)

RW - nice idea but the problem with US vs Europe for top names is that we have 2000 years of history and in the 400 years history that US has much of it is european led ... at least initially. George Washington would not have risen to his position if it wasn't for his work with and then against the English In fact, he was an unassuming guy who probably wouldn't have made world leader anywhere else in the world (I love stirring it)

So, if 20% of pilots in EHM are US and US has about a quarter of the modern history of europe that leaves the US with a 5% proportion of planes to name. Oh go on you guys ... you can have the wright brothers ... now, back to the Europeans. To add international flavour from a United Kingdom perspective perhaps we could include some philosophers - 'cos there sure ain't that many in the UK... oh hold on ... how about fallen politicians. We could have a great week. The Prescott (lands heavily and pretty much anywhere) The Charles Clarke (huge wings but not particularly aerodynamic). The Blair (always looks like it's about to crash but pulls out of the most terrifying tail spins and acts like nothing happened).

BTW Razza, from what I hear about Sunderland ladies, they'll go down pretty much anywhere.

Difficult one that Razza. I guess the answer is yes but not for transitory folk who are of the moment. I wouldn't for example include the likes of Madonna, or even Elton John. They are current yes but almost certainly of the moment. There would be an argument for people who have lived beyond their moment - e.g. John Lennon. Sport's stars again is a difficult one. The Americans here would argue for say, Babe Ruth. Most Europeans know he played Baseball and struck out dozens of times before ever getting a home run. However, most folk couldn't put a face or team to him. He is a national folk hero maybe but not an international star. Most of Europe would argue the same if we tried to place the likes of Geoff Hurst or Bobby Charlton up there. They are national heros but not really recognised in the same way internationally. For an international VA we would need people who are recognised internationally.

Sorry, for a moment I found myself being serious ... anyway back to winding up the yanks

Otto Lilenthal is the father of flight and without him the Wright brothers would have had no starting point ... he deserves a named plane more therefore than the Wright brothers.

What about the inventor of television ... no .... calm down over the pond ... not Philo Farnsworth who although Time man of the year actually got there half a decade behind ... John Logie Baird.

Marco Polo ... one of those strange ones where we need to nod and say .yeah, interesting guy. but on the international stage I would argue the guy isn't quite making the top list.

As I said, maybe Otto should have a place over Wilbur and Orville ... or is that the duck! Maybe Orville the duck should be up there ... I wish I could fly... right up to the sky ... and now I can with EHM

I like the inclusion of Neil Armstrong but alongside this Iury seems like an also ran. (Oh no ... what's happening to me ... I'm bigging up the americans!)

This is such a contentious issue ... I'm enjoying the debate. Perhaps we could throw in Barnes Wallace ... at least if the plane crashed out it would probably bounce

The problem is we need to find people who's history cannot be contended either. It really is impossible if you try and speak with the Americans who in four hundred years of history claim pretty much every invention. (Take the automobile - car - invented by the frenchman Joseph Cugnot in 1769. The gasoline variation later invented by Daimler and Benz. Now, go ask an American who invented the car! Indeed, do an internet search on it and you'll find thousands of pages of incorrect history!) We should try to avoid these disputes and find people internationally agreed to be the tops. (So, I take back my Sir Francis Drake lest those who remember him as the pirate, El Draco are offended )
