At the beginning of the jet era, given the success of their earlier propeller airliners, Douglas decided that there was no reason to rush in to designing a jet powered passenger aircraft, as did their rivals Lockheed and Convair. This was however to prove costly for them as Boeing were already well ahead in the Jet race, designing and testing the first prototypes of what would eventually become the 707. By 1955 Douglas had realized their mistake and announced the DC8 project a full year after the first flight of the Boeing 367-80, the smaller prototype version of the 707. By 1959, Douglas had managed to make up some of the time they had lost and by September the DC8 was rushed in to Service with Delta and United, only just over a year after the first 707 of Pan-Am!

Although there were a large number of different models of the DC8, all used the same basic design and airframe, the differences were in the weight and the engines fitted as well as some other subtle details. By the end of the 60’s sales were slowing and Douglas announced fuselage stretches and more powerful engines resulting in the Super 60 and Super 70 models. You can still find some of these models in service today, flying mainly freight and with the exception of some KC135 tankers (Military 707’s) of the USAF, these are the only remaining early jet aircraft still in service.

EuroHarmony entered in to the jet era at the end of the sixties with the DC8-30 which served mainly on long haul routes connecting the continents and capital cities. This model is made by HJG, Historic Jetliners Group and the aircraft can be used to fly Class 5 Main Division flights.
